Need some info about the stock stereo
Hey guys,
I have a sub setup from my other car and now i wanna put it into my new rex. My question is, on the indash 6 cd changer in the car, does it have rca cable hook ups in teh back or if i put this system in, will i have a huge pain in teh butt in doing it. I really don't wanna be cutting any wires plus i don't wanna buy a new headunit b/c i actually like the stock one so if you ahve any suggestion please shoot them this way.
Thanks
Matt

There are line level converter units that will take hi output and convert it to line level. I used a set years ago. The disadvantage is you are taking the distortion from the head unit and adding it to the distortion of the amp you use. Plus I'm guessing the converter will do something to the signal too. Here is what I mean:

Your best bet, to have good clean sound, is to change the head unit too I'm afraid.

Nakamichi makes several in-dash cd changers (The MB-75 and MB-100). You can find them at http://www.onlinecarstereo.com but they are hella expensive.
I plan on getting one of these eventually, I've heard good things about them. Currently I have my sub running off the rear speakers. I'm using the exact line converter mentioned above. Good luck.

It's not Bose, but with the right gain settings it is pretty good. I'm using a Fosgate amp... I've always been happy with them and the distortion is minimal except at high volumes, but that's typical with a low voltage head unit like the stock one.
Since I have it running off the rear's, I can keep it in check with Fade.
Considering I like the in-dash changer and I'm not ready to blow $500 on a Nakamichi... it works just fine.
My next upgrade is a second amp with MB Quart speakers in the doors. Very similar to what I ran in my Integra. I'll let you know how that sounds once I get it done. I'll be running the signals through an Audiocontrol line leveler and EQ, so I'm anticipating low distortion. Audiocontrol makes a good product. I guess I could use the EQ for the sub now... but it seems like overkill for some lowend Bass that is already running through a low-pass filter.
Is anyone else doing anything similar? How does it sound?

I used Line level converter in my factory radio for my WRX and really there's not a notable distortion. Use a good quality RCA cables and as shorter as possible. If is from the dash to the trunk
12' are good.
12' are good.

Mine are RF 15' (ish) shielded cables, the standard ones that come in the RF amp wiring kit. Pretty decent. Used 18 ga wire spliced into the rear channels to connect the deck to the converter. With the gain turned all the way down on the converter... you are right, the distortion is not very noticable. The stock speakers start distorting before the subs do.
I agree, it sounds good. The real test will be door speakers/amp with the stock head unit. That's my next endeavor.
