Need a new windshield - out of pocket, or insurance?

So driving on 80 the other day after the flood, there were tons of tiny rocks on the road. I was lucky enough to catch one with my windshield. The chip has grown to be over about 8" long and I need a new windshield.

It doesn't seem to me as if the glass that is on the car right now is OEM glass as it has been replaced before by the previous owner. I have state farm with a $250 deductible.

I believe my options are:

1) Spend roughly $200 and get an aftermarket windshield replacement.
2) Report to insurance, pay the $250 deductible, and have them pay for an OEM windshield replacement.

I'm leaning toward option two as I have had bad experience with "china" glass. I went through 3 of these aftermarket windshields on my Prelude. My question is, will State Farm pay for an OEM windshield replacement if the glass on my car is not an original one.

Thanks for your help

-Tony

Did you Check to see if your insurance company did glass coverage, alot of them will do it free of charge... If not, personally it's not werth the increase in insurance rate... I would pay it out of pocket...

My .02 Cents

Edit: Why not spend the extra money then instead of going through windshields like Candy and buy an OEM Windshield then?!

usually the windshield deductible is different from the regular collision deductible.

Last time i got a windshield replaced, it was a 50$ deductible.

Ya, that too. That is why I was saying for him to call his insurance company and ask, they NORMALLY treat glass chips/cracks ALOT different then car accidents...

The oem windshield isn't exactly bulletproof glass themselves....

Cheat Em!!

what you do is, call your insurance agent, ask if you have windshield coverage, if you dont, then add it (its like 3 bucks more a month usually.. but well worth it) and bare with the broken windshield for another month, then call your insurance after a month or so and say "hey my windshield is cracked" and they replace it with no deductible as apart of their "windshield special coverage" its great. i did that with my integra with farmers insurance.

Windshield coverage is under collision for me and will not affect my premium. I can't afford the $500 + labor for an OEM windshield myself.

What I'm worried about is, if I go through insurance - will they pay for an OEM windshield if the glass on my car right now isn't OEM.

Thanks for the suggestions guys

When I had to replace my windshield my insurance only made me pay $100 deductable rather then the normal $500 deductable so it was well worth it going through them instead of out of pocket.

Comprehensive only covers theft, vandalism, and the like. If somebody broke my windshield, then it would be comprehensive - I think

Insurance is complicated.

Just an update - made a few phone calls to get more information.

I'm going to go through insurance and pay the $250 deductible to get OEM subaru glass with the OEM moldings, etc.

I've been reading up on a lot of glass information and apparently the front windshield accounts for up to 60% of the roof support in a roll over situation - something to think about when opting for inferior aftermarket glass.

Lots of good information at http://www.acrglass.com/links.htm

Anyways, thanks for all the help guys

I had to replace the windshield in my old Integra, and AAA covered the replacement, including tinting, free of charge. It was not counted as a filed claim against the policy either. I don't know if other insurance companies do that, and now that you've made your choice, it's sort of moot, but it's something to consider in the future.

Most good insurance places will only give you OEM replacement. I know 21st insists that it's OEM if they cover it.
