If its a hand gun you need a handgun safety certificate. ( you can get this when you purchase). but if its a rifle or shotgun you just need $. Plus there is the 10 day waiting period.

HK is far overrated, and the beretta 92FS has the worst trigger ever.

I suggest Springfield XD.

Get a Glock. Unmatched durability and good build quality. What are you using it for though?

The HK USP's are good guns....they work alot better in Desert than the Berettas. Weak points: the trigger bar and firing pin usually goes out first (about 10,000) and they are expensive to replace. Their triggers need alot of breaking in to smooth them up.

The Berettas (92 F, 92 FS, M9) are good guns, but the engineered service life is about 10,000 rounds. They have been having problems with the reliability, due to the cheap replacement magazines they are using now.

The trigger can be cleaned up alot by replacing the stock mainspring with a competion 1911 mainspring, and taking a ceramic stick to polish the sear and hammer contact surfaces.

The XD is a real good gun for the money, but I have seen many firing pin breakages, due to the design, but Springfield Armoury is great in their warranty department.

As far as recommending a handgun, just try all types and find one that fits your hand the best. Also, spending good money on one will yield positive results.

I've been looking into getting a .45/1911, but I am a hand gun n00b.....so what are some good guns that I should check out when I am ready to buy? I want reliability and accuracy mainly.

Noob & Glock seems to be a match made in heaven. They are natural pointers, not complicated, forgiving in almost all areas. I would not recommend a .45/1911 to a new shooter unless you plan on spending a lot of time at the range & ammo money. Whichever one you get, think about getting some good training. Ask at your nearby range and also check out http://www.frontsight.com/ Also check into getting a safe as CA gun laws can smoke you on that too! Even if you correctly believe that an unloaded gun in a locked safe is useless, its a good idea to have one for the onerous legal reasons and there are some practical ones too. Good luck.

My vote is for SIG. Get a SIG CPO'd P226. Glock is a great $150 gun, too bad it costs $550+. HK's are good too, but their customer service is pretty much the Steven's Creek of the gun world. Better pray you never need to send that thing back into the factory. Alot of USP owners have problems with broken trigger bars and their guns took MONTHS to get fixed thru HK. SIG customer service on the other hand is top notch and all their CPO'd guns have warranty. I say go that route. It will out shoot any Glock, Springfield XD, Beretta, etc and feel alot more comfortable in your hand than a USP.

2 words: sig sauer -- to hell and back reliability.

may i recommend the sig 226R DAK. the R means you have a rail to mount lights and stuff. the DAK is the really cool trigger action...

finally, get it in the .40 cal.
