I work at a small architecture office in sf, as an architectural designer (something like that, no formal title). you can associate my office with works such as gordon biersch sf (not the pa or sj stores), firewood cafe, and the fantasia tea cafes in santana row, and rivermark santa clara, among other stuff. i'm glad you like thirsty bear.
The layout is what makes that place cool. All in one building there is the brewing room, quiete rooms for dinner, an apetizer lounge like room, a bar, and upstairs there is another bar with a club type room that I hear you can rent out. I think they are a bit on the cotly side though. I think they were like $5 a pint or so.

speaking of mellow places to grab a beer in the city...

there is a little Chzech place located right off Colombus in the lower area near the financial district. It is on the NE side of the street. awesome Pilsner Urquell on tap, and you can get pints at happy hour fur under $3

No offense, but I can NEVER understand why people like that place. In fact, ALL the Buca's, incl the ones in SoCal, that I've been to have been terrible!

Seriously, I think Chef Boy R Dee's spaghetti is better!!

Oh well..........

btw, i think onion mentioned that most of his group is under 21, but my uncle is an investor in the GLAS KAT retaurant/club in SF.

The food there is actually pretty good. It's not 4 or 5 star cuisine, but they've really made strides to consistently improve the food quality since it opened years ago. Again, it'll run you a little closer to $20-25/head, esp. w/alcohol, but if you dine @ the restaurant, you get free entry to the club the SAME night, which works out to be a pretty good deal!

CLsmooth71....buca is give or take....I was just there a couple weeks ago and the food was actually quite good.... had much italian food elsewhere but for large groups it's a pretty cool set up. I could recommend tons of 4 stars and top line restaurants in the city I've been too like Aqua but I really don't think they want to spend $50-150 a person.

Dub2....you remember what that place is called...I'd love to check it out.
Some of my favorite little kick back bars in the city are the Irish Bank and Lucky 13.

Buca's accomodations are pretty good for large parties, but I dunno......I don't think I'm being hypercritical about the food being not that good. Honestly, I've been to Buca almost 10 times (not by choice), and I've never had anything that I really liked. Several times, I had dishes that I absolutely hated........Lasgna was COLD and tasteless one time and another occasion, my spaghetti noodles were HARD and looked like it had been something from the night before!

As I mentioned before, I could suggest a bunch of other places w/really great food & atmosphere, but most of them would probably be a lil pricier and not as festive as Onion would like for his girl's party. I eat out A LOT though, and it's one of the things I enjoy just about as much (or even more than).................

After seven years, the "circular" "electric bar" at this upper market "poseur" "palace" is still mecca "for Dolce&Gabbana-clad gay boys" and "straight friends who want to get their groove on" listening to "pounding" DJ-spun beats; but the Eclectic-New American "food is surprisingly good" as is master sommelier Emmanuel Kemiji's wine list; both are best enjoyed in the back "section when you want a quiet romantic dinner" rather than "a scene".

Rating:
Food: 19, Decor: 22, Service: 18
10-15: fair to good, 16-19: very good, 20-25: very good to excellent, 26-30: extraordinary to perfection

Cost: $41 per person, expensive

May not be a good place for party, but you could try it out for a romantic dinner.

onionring: Dunno if you're into that sorta thing, but Mecca's a gay bar. Just wanted to let you know, just in case.
If you like Hawaiian food, there's a quiet little place on Judah and 34th called E Komo Mai. They can fit 20 people easily, serve authentic Hawaiian cuisine (about $15 a head or so), and have live Hawaiian music on Friday and Saturday nights. Just make sure you call ahead to make reservations (sorry I don't have the phone number on me right now )
If you're into Malaysian food, there's a GREAT place in San Mateo on North El Camino Real called Penang Garden. It's strictly a restaurant, but the decor's pretty nice and the food is AWESOME!!!!!!! Depending on what you order, can be about $13 to $50 per person.
If you like Chinese food, there's a few good places... Parc Hong Kong on Geary at about 17th (great seafood and Peking Duck), **** Yuen (yeah I know the name's funny ) on El Camino in Millbrae (really good nightly dinner specials; call for details), and Seafood Harbor also on El Camino in Millbrae (great seafood). These again are all strictly restaurants, but you can still hold a mini-banquet in one of their available private rooms.
Feel free to PM me if you're interested in any more info

OneManArmy... I want to say that place is called Little Prague but I know that that is wrong.

It is pretty easy to find. Pretend you were in the financial districy at the base of Colombus. If you went up about 2-3 streets there is a big brick building on the right hand side. If you hung a right on that street (small narrow street), you would see this little cafe / restaurant on the left. To give you an idea of where it lies on Colombus, it is very close to the Micro-brewery (almost across the street i think)

When I was living in the city that was one of my favorite spots. I would hit it up for beers and then walk up to Figaro for the best gnocchi in the Bay
