So my laptop completely crashed out of nowhere and I'm lost on what to do. I was in the middle of loading up music from an external hard drive, that a friend loaded up with new music, onto itunes then out of nowhere it completely crashed. It made a loud buzzing sound and the screen just went black and blue. I was forced to shut it down by holding down the power button.

Windows OS cd cloned to a thumb drive, boot from thumb drive, select repair Windows XP installation via recovery console, run the Fixboot tool (fixboot c, then use Fixmbr tool (Fixmbr).

If thosw dont work you'll need an in place upgrde, it reinstalls the OS into the same folder. Reboot the computer, select the first option at the Windows XP Pro Setup screen, and select "R" for repair at the next one (As opposed to the Fresh Install option where you lose data).

This is what I would do as well, run the chkdsk (if needed, pull the drive out and hook it as an external slave drive to another computer).

Running that chkdsk with /r (repair) will repair the things you screwed up when doing this.

Computer Images ftw, especially with free KP laptops haha.

there could be other factors. maybe there was a fatal error with itunes while you were using it, AND/OR any other program you had open or were running which caused the entire windows to shut down..

and during this time again if your hdd was working, during the shut down it corrupted files.. not just any files, but important windows system files and/or boot sector.

that is why you cant load windows. this is common.

It happened to me and with friends I know.

There are ways to retrieve your files through several methods, some already mentioned by people.

Here is a ghetto one, but works, but takes more time.
Just reinstall windows in a different directory, once its complete, save the files, then reformat and put windows 7
fixed! as stated by eugenile.. a fatal error corrupted some files due to itunes. Kaspersky did not find any viruses or anything infected. so I didn't spread any viruses. chkdsk found corrupted files in the itunes directory and repaired failed sectors. Everythings back to working order without reinstalling windows or reformat.
