Need Help: Introducing Kitty, to my pitt bull

so my sister decided to get a cat (im a dog person) but we have had a pittbull Hurley for 2yrs now and he HATES cats...so yesterday i tried to introduce them to eachother, while the dog was tied up and i held the cat. the cat was hissing and the dog was just tense and wanted to get no barking or growling...today was day 2 of introduction, the dog was the same and the cat was really mellow,i eventually put the cat down and let him walk by the dog. they got about one foot from eachother, but as soon as i picked up the cat, my dog tried to bite him(missed luckily by about an inch).

So my question to you i-clubbers is How can i do this? any tips? TIA (pics of said cat and dog upon request)

You're the master in this situation. Submit the dog in front of the cat, keep him in a submitted position whilst the cat sniffs him and explores him. Any time the dog makes an aggressive move towards the cat you instantly put him on his back/side in a submission position. Eventually he'll respect you as the master.

This worked with my friends boxer who hated cats...it took him months to get him to eventually stop chasing the cat but nowdays they tolerate each other. I'm not sure if a pitbull will take longer.

He also walks the dog to death so the dog knows who the boss is and is mellow from all the exercise.

Hope this helps.

I actually have the opposite problem since my cat chases my dog, beats him up and eats his food.

But I suggest what glen said, show you are the alpha and that the cat is not going away and that if he hurts the cat he will suffer from your wrath.

Reminds me of the introduction our cat and dog had.

Humane Society "greeting room" - dog off-leash, cat prowling around. Dog ignores cat, cat walks over and pops him upside the head - no claws, just a paw. Dog pretends to ignore cat, cat tries it again, dog growls and bares his teeth.

Cat came home, dog knew cat was on his third strike for attacking dogs and other cats, so he's been pretty mellow. Occasionally, they rub up against each other - and no one gets hurt.

As far as your situation, simply let the dog figure out that the cat isn't a threat, and he'll grow to accept the cat. Consult NatGeo channel on Friday afternoons if you need more assistance.

i did the same thing with what glen suggested, its just a matter of exposure to each other in a controlled way.you holding the cat while your dog is leashed, just reward your dog for behaving so he knows hes doing good.
