Need Help with a 240 Engine Swap

Hey guys I know there are a lot of S14 fans here and was wondering if you could point me to someone who sells a complete front clip for a Skyline GT-S 2.5t. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Nah Preston my bro in NY picked one up and he is gonna be doing the swap. I'm flying out in March for a few weeks and we'll work on the car then.

Thanks Zoeb and Redstage for the references.

Are you swapping in the RB25? From what I read (back when I was thinking of doing a swap if I got a 240) the SR20DET fits better and it produces better power. Though, this is me trying to remember over 3 years ago...

RB25DET is capable of holding more than the SR20DET. Both engines are awesome, SR has the downlow while the RB covers the higher power and top end.

Owned CA18DET, SR20DET and an RB20DET powered car and truthfully....I like the pull of the RB over the SR, but the SR pulled better. The CA was bullet proof though....I miss my Nissan's which is why I ended up with the WRX.

Mckinney has been in the business with the engine swaps since before they got popular, if they can't help you I would be surprised.

I think the owner used to go by the name Grumpy. If you talk to him tell him Marc from Velocity says hello....it might not do much for you, but it's where I knew him from

That is a possible option but at the same time throwing a turbo on a KA, with most likely atleast 100k miles just doesn't seem reliable. I know KAs are supposed to be bullet proof, but just my thoughts make it seem bad...

yeah I originaly wanted to do an RB or SR swap(yeah, I was like every other over-anxious 240 noob) but after doing a ton of reserach up till now it looks like the turbo KA is the most practical way to go about turboing a 240.

Hear me out. Im not talking about 500whp on a stock block, but its a pretty standard setup to run a safe 7-8psi on a T28 on pump gas on a totaly stock motor, stock compression and head gasket and all. This setup spools like hell and gets around 250rwhp. They sell KA-t manifolds for around $150-200 that you can use take-off SR turbos with that put the turbo right where they would be on the SR, so you can use all the commonly available SR parts, dump tube, DP, FMIC, etc.

The parts for doing a KA-t are dirt cheap,
stock SR injectors - $100
Walbo - 100
Manifold - 150
t28 from an SR - 400

Im not adding in the cost of intercooler/DP/tuning since these also dont come with the price of SR/RB swaps either. Your on your own with the JDM motors too.

Tuning options are the same as with the SR, piggy backs or Jim Wolf/Enthalpy reflashes, though I plan to use the new daughterboard from Bikirom http://www.bikirom.com/ this can best be compared to an AccessPort but for around $225 US! this is the biggest downfall to KA-t setups, they usually just get tuned with a SAFC. With a way to get a safe tune the KA-ts a no-brainer.

My plan for now is to throw on a 1mm over metal head gasket to drop CR down to around 8.7/1 to give me a little more headroom for boost. the whole setup will run me about 1K in part, versus 3-5K for an SR-RB swap, just in parts. And as for reliability, well Im not going to argue that a motor with 100K+ miles is not in the prime of its life, but keep in mind these are NA miles on a motor thats anything but high reving or high compression, thats why theres so many 200K+ KAs. as compared to SRs, gone are the days of getting a 30-40K SR swap, most of the ones Ive seen comeing onto the market now are getting up there in miles, even for JDM motors! and chances are the ones your picking up have lived a pretty hard life too

The other question is are you going to pay to get all this installed and wired in? If you can install headers, you can put on a turbo/manifold. Done. Another important consideration, that alot of SR/RB guys seem to get amnesia around, THIS IS CALIFORNIA!!!

I always marvel at how many 240s with SR/RB swaps I see listed for cheap on craigslist when these guys realize, "oh yeah, I have to smog this pos every couple years!!" what the hell, did they forget about that?? Or regardless of smog, how many people here have had their hood poped, what would you rather have to do to get your car past ref, swap the stock headers back on or do another motor swap?

Oh, and if you get bored of boosting on the stock motor, its not like a built KA24 is an slouch and two of these were on stock rods!

XS Engineering turbo kit! I remembered 4 years ago when I asked GReddy if they were ever going to release their turbo kit for the KA24DE. They said they would and it was on their ads for a good 1-2 years that it's coming soon, but it never happened since they felt there wasn't much of a market for 240SX's at the time (according to their response).

I second the Wolf Technology piggy back.

Holy crap, Velocity? I haven't heard that name in years. I always oogled at the cars from the Japan chapters on their site (velocity.isfaster.com I think?) when I first started college. I haven't seen that site in years though. =)

Krinkov makes an outstanding point on the mileage of the motors from Japan. Also....these engines come from junkyards....how do cars usually get in junkyards? How long do they sit there?

There are alot of "What if's" in buying these engines. I used to live in Japan and new a yard or two that was selling SR's to the states....we had a friend end up in the US with a blown SR....we seriously had to go and shake the hell out of the owner of the yard to get him to make good on his word to honor any defective motors...

We later found out that he knew the engine had oil pump problems and swapped on a non damaged oil pan and shipped the motor....thinking he would never hear anything about it. He was wrong.
