There are alot of "What if's" in buying these engines. I used to live in Japan and new a yard or two that was selling SR's to the states....we had a friend end up in the US with a blown SR....we seriously had to go and shake the hell out of the owner of the yard to get him to make good on his word to honor any defective motors...
We later found out that he knew the engine had oil pump problems and swapped on a non damaged oil pan and shipped the motor....thinking he would never hear anything about it. He was wrong.

VRT? Velocity? Are they still around?
I would stick with the SR motors as they have tons of aftermarket support and parts are pretty easy to get. As far as buying the motor, its really a mixed bag - a lot of the time even the people selling them don't know the history of them. The most you can do is maybe do a compression test before taking it home.
Or do what I did when I blew my SR the first time - take it all apart and rebuild the whole motor. Then you'll know 100% the condition of your motor.
As for KA-T... I have yet to meet a KA-T motor that has had their motor last for a long period of time under track conditions. The most reliable turbo motors are the ones that come from the factory with a turbo.
