need BAIC help on ECU stuff

hi Bay folks

sooo, this weekend i got my downpipe installed finally, and while i was updating the ecu with my APv1, it bricked. not sure how, but it did.

The ECU is off to Cobb today, but my APv1 is now dead, married to a bricked ecu. I initially thought i would do the trade-in program or buy a used APv2 and be done with it.

The other option is all this open source stuff. But my concern is getting the right maps for my mods so to speak. I haven't searched too much, but should i assume that there are good open source stage 2 maps out there? for the short temr, that is my biggest concern. once i get my ecu back, i need to flash it for the catless tbe i currently am running.

i am currently looking for deals on APv2 but can easily be swayed to get a tantrix cable and go open source. open source seems a bit cheaper in the end.....

any and all help/opinions is MUCH appreciated. as you can guess, time is somewhat an issue here....

why didn't you send the ap to cobb as well? They probably would have taken care of it for you.

You can do the trade in or sell the ap1 for mad cheap and let someone else do it and go opensource. Tuners can still tune opensource. The problem lies in how easily the user can mess with it. And the temptation is often to high for some folks. Start messing with stuff and blow your motor up you have no one to blame and no shop support. All on you.

If you go opensource I highly suggest having a tuner tune it. I'd just call a tuner and ask them....

OS is definitely cheaper but I like the fact that you can have multiple maps on the AP. and just change them super easy. I don't trust myself with OS and a computer. haaa.

thanks OMA

Cobb wont support the ap v1 anymore. I am much like you in that as i get older, i want to mess with this stuff less and less. so the APv2 seems like a decent idea. access to a tuner is hard up here, and I think i will probably go the OS in the future. I'd like to be a tuner myself if that makes sense, i just dont have a ton of time to dedicate THIS WEEK!! ugg.

now i just need to find a decent deal on an APv2. I have sent PM's to a few people on iwst selling theirs. hopefully someone has one for a deal....

if you have very basic mods OS has PLENTY of well-tested "off-the-shelf" maps. just take a look at the romraider forums.

if you're thinking you will go opensource and actually mess with your tune in the future start reading up now before you even touch a map. you may find that your temptation to change maps is a lot less than you think (that has been my case). i really only check on my tune when the weather changes to make sure stuff is alright.

Just drive down the hour and a half for a real custom tune. The OTS maps really can't compare to a custom tune in terms of performance, drivability, and reliability. You won't be disappointed

yes, i do plan to have a "custom" tune done. time is a serious issue for me though.

Ed, would you get the AP or use OS? What do YOU like to tune?

I agree with Ed on this one.

If you're wanting to be a tuner then OS might not be a bad way to go. You can get a custom tune with OS. Then later down the line start self tuning... (your choice, your risk of course).

If you carry your lap top around you can swap tunes easy enough.

On the AP tip though. I hear the AP2 has a lot of nice new features.

oh and Paul isn't too far from you. In fact I think he lives near Truckee.

My drive down to EQ is somewhere in the range of 4-5 hours and I consider it a trip well spent.

yeah, Paul is right in Roseville (shop). i PMed him a while back and never heard back. bummer.

And at this point, i think i am going to APv2 for now, and after the first of the year, start using OS. I am looking at dyno's also (pricey buggars), hence the "i want to be a tuner" part. i have been wrestling with this for a while, and my ECU bricking yesterday has me feeling helpless. I dont like that.

I have heard the same good things you have about the AP also....

The end result from an AP or OS tune is identical if the tuner is well versed in both platforms. The general tuning procedure is very similar as well. The Cobb AP/ProTuner platform does offer real time tuning which can make the tune a bit quicker, but the OS guys have been playing with realtime as well. Remember that when people refer to "OpenSource Tuning", they're just referring to a collection of tools. There are several software options to choose from and infinite ways to set them up.

IMO, the AP holds the major advantage for people who need to switch between maps relatively often, and do so quickly and easily. This is useful for people running race gas, meth injection, E-85, etc. The AP V2 also offers some nice data logging features that can be useful for providing feedback to a tuner or performing remote tunes.

For people who will not be using multiple fuels and switching maps often, a good OS tune is a great option. They can save $600-$700 on an AP and instead just pay for the tuning time. Most such people who buy the AP end up keeping it in their closet between tunes.

Thanks

Oh Noooes!

Seriously though, if you're really interested in learning to tune, I do offer tuner training sessions as well. I have trained and support a couple professional tuners as well as several DIY hobby tuners. The sessions are not cheap, but well worth it for the knowledge and techniques you gain.
