Anyone that thinks an AWD vehicle with snow tires isn't better than a FWD vehicle with snow tires has never driven in snow outside of california. Period.
I've driven everything in the snow. Dirt bike. Quad. Dune buggy. RWD. FWD. AWD. 4WD. Everything from a nissan pulsar to a mini van full of junior high kids. WRX on RE070's. Lifted blazer on 35's.
a light FWD vehicle with good snow tires rips. No doubt. But when the stuff gets deep it's nice to have more than 1/2 tires spinning. Especially when we're talking about going up steep hills or more importantly... down them.
And it's really nice having 4 tires trying to get traction when you're spinning down the middle of the highway.
