Day 4: Tuesday continued

Man was Tuesday a long frickin day, filled with many ups and downs. We started off doing the same thing. Just walkig down to Chestnut and picking out a coffee shop. They have so many that within a weeks time we should never have to enter the same one twice. Todays stop off was at Starbucks. Which i would have never went into, except from the street you could see this back sitting room that had tables and a fireplace. So in we went. Plus the other thing at drew of in was restrooms. Yesterday over at Pete's Coffee they failed to have a restroom. Sure they said you could come around the counter and use the one in the back but that's just wrong in my opinion.

Before leaving the house i thought we had the whole day planned out. Was i wrong. From Chestnut we jumped on the Muni Bus (#30) on our way to "Chinatown" and our favorite Chinese restaurant. Back when i was a club junky i was on the Muni's night after night riding from one end of the city to the other. One thing for sure it's a trip you'll not soon forget. Especially if you get a good and packed one like the #30. People just lose their minds on a packed bus. Luckily for us we got on near the beginning of the line so there was plenty of seating, but that didn't last long. And when i started getting into Chinatown. What a bunch of a$$holes. There would be 20 people cramming their way up the rear stairs while people were trying to get off. Several times they had to yell out to the driver to not leave yet, because they couldn't even force their way down the stairs.

We got off on the corner of Stockton & Washington and what a relief it was just to be off the bus. From there it was straight down Washinton for a half a block to "Lucky Creation". The best hole in the wall vegetarian place around. We've been going there for as long as we've been together. Which is about 12 years. The moment we stepped in we were greeted with smiles from the same three ladies that have been there for years. It always feels good to be reconized at a good restaurant because we know they won't jack you around.

We ordered a large place of Gluten puff for an appetizer. Then for lunch we had Toro Fish and sauce over golden mushrooms with soft bean curd and bok chow. Wow just thinking about it again i can smell it.

Then i was off to sight see around the Union Sqare area. Plus we had a gift certificate for Borders for $50 which we felt we had to get rid of. We went back up to Stockton and turned (left) heading for the Union Suare tunnel. But then we got it in our minds that we wanted to hit up some really nice hotels just to see what they look like inside. We took the stairs up above the tunnel and headed up Pine St going towards The Fairmont & The Top of the Mark. Damn wouldn't it be nice to have that kind of money to stay in a place like that. Grace Cathedral also looked nice, but i wasn't going in there. So then it was down the hill on Taylor on our way back towards Union Square and Borders. Man did they have a crappy music section. Sure their jazz section was OK but the rock/pop and electronic departmants sucked a$$. Not to forget about the "smells". For awile i was walking around picking up these whiffs of something foul and i was so paranoid that it was me. I kept trying to smell myself and not look too obvious about it. Then i was going over my whole getting ready process and thinking back "did i forget to put deodorant on this morning". But no i didn't it was just all the other people in the pop section. Each giving off their own unique personilized sent. Oh my god did i have to get out of this place. I was looking for the second Peace Orchestra CD or even the new Muze CD and couldn't find either. But i did however find something i really wanted which is Klute's double CD 2003 release of "Lie Cheat & Steal" and "You Should be Ashamed". Christina picked up the new self-titled "Cure" cd and we were on our way again.

Day 4: Tuesday final

After Borders we were looking for a place we thought was called "The Sky Bar" and we believed it was in the St Francis Hotel, so in we went. We ended up goimg everywhere in that place. Taking the elevators up to the top looking for the bar. Walking down hallways and stairs you name it but we couldn't find anything. The only thing found up there was my overwelming fear of heights. We were probably up about 20 stories but i couldn't go near a window. My knees would just give out on me. Then we walked down to the 19th floor and over to the far end of the building looking for an elevator down. But on the way we came across area were i had to walk across a "bridge" in the hall that connected it to the other side of the building. Granted it was only 15-20 feet long but i was only 6 feet wide, and on both sides nothing but windows. Christina began to laugh as i froze in place right before the bridge. Ecen from back here i could see it was a long way down. You know the fear is something very hard to control. My mind starts running through all these "what if's" like what if while i was walking across the bridge i tripped on my shoelaces and it sent me head first right through the window. Or what if a that moment there was a 8.0 earthquake and i was thrown through the window. I ended up mashing my teeth together and squinting my eyes and went for it. Now i don't know if it was me or if it was real. But that floor did not feal solid. More like plywood laying over a large gap and you can feel it flexing as you walk across it. Maybe this "Sky Bar" thing was not such a good idea.

Instead we walked down Geary for a few blocks to "The Grand Cafe" where a friend of mine said i had to go into. Wow was i not disappointed. It was beautiful in there and for the lunch hours the food is at a good price. But after that whole thing with the height issue i needed a drink. So we sat in the bar and i ordered a "Julia Gappa and a double Espresso". Christina got her standard "Lemondrop". After all we were planning on a big japanese dinner so we really didn't want to get started with food.

It's funny how a few drinks can change "everything". Before i knew if we were talking about how we were going to stay in the area until 6:30 or so when the Grand Cafe changed over to their dinner menu and in the meantime we would go around hitting up the other bars in the area. We talked to our waitress about "the sky bar" and she said we most likely were looking for "The Starlight Room" which was onto of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. St Francis / Sir Francis.... you could see how we made the mistake.

Once again we were riding elevators trying to get to the top of some damn hotel. Sure even from the outside you could see the dark red curtains and the large windows that over looked the city. that had to be the place. We check the board in the lobby of the hotel. It read Starlight Room 21 st floor Hours 4:30 - 12:30 so up we go. But the damn elevator only goes as high as the 18th. The Starlight Room botton is not lighting up when you hit the botton. This suck.. we somehow got a bad elevator that keeps going to other floors while we are trying to go up. People get on and off and we are still standing there wondering "what the hell's going on" It stopps again at the 18th floor and we can hear people on the other side of the door getting on and off the other three elevators that are all right next to each other. So we hit "open doors" There we are stuck on the 18th floor. So we head to the stairs and head up. We've been walking so many hills these past few day, what's a couple of fleights of stairs. Turning the corner at the 20th story there's yellow striped tape reading "authorised personal only". So being the non-rule breaker that i am it was out to the 20th floor. This was the specail super rich part of the hotel where people "lived" in the rooms not just stayed in them . The elevators only went to the 18th floor and then straight to the 21st. Plus many of the doors had plaques with names engraved upon them. F*ck the Starlight Room lets get out of here. So we got back into an elevator and headed down. Man was my high from the grappa burning off. I needed another drink. Half way down an employee jumps on our car. He tells us that the Starlight doesn't open till 6:30 these days. We tell him they need to update their signs.

The next place i was hoping to go was the Cheesecake lounge on the roof of the Macy's building right in Union Square. But Christina has other ideas she says "let's go get ourselves some new watches." I had been without one now for months and she'ld been without one for over a year. So instead of going up when we get into Macy's we're going down to the watch departmant. Now i know it can't be "all women" but man do they have a hard time making up their minds. Withing minutes in know just the one i want, now it's a waiting game while she goes over there tries on that one then that one..........

After she picks one out it's dinner time so back to The Grand Cafe we go via Market St for a good Muni bus map & schedule book. I remember when those things were free but now they cost $2.00, but i'm not complaining. It's a good book and not a bad map of the city. Well on our way zig-zaggin our way to the corner of Geary & Taylor we stumble upon "First Crush" A high scale restaurant we'ld been meaning to try for some time. They have one also in Mill Valley and that was the one we ahd planned to visit but this one was right here. Outside was a guy dressed in nice clothes and a long black jacket. I'm still wearing my day clothes (shorts, white socks , my puma skater shoes) So i ask him "hey do you thing i'm underdressed to be going in there?" He says "no, i think you'll be fine" With his approval in we go. The hostess says they are having a fun wine tasting going on downstairs so we but our names on the list for dinner and decend the stairs. It's a small dark room with a bar and a couple of people talking. The fellow form out from comes with us and we begin hanging out and going through all the wine tasting stuff withe wine maker who is "really" into it. Well if any of you know i can put down alot of wine. We try the White then the Piot and then the Cab. but after trying the Cab he is greated by some old friends and alot more people to try his wines. So in the madness of everthing he leaves the last botle on our table. Hhehehehhhee a big smile crosses my face and we dig in. The new guy Brian from out front is very nice and we start talking about how he's planning on trying to open he own restaurant with friends. We get along right away. But Christina knows i want to start talking cars. He's Philipino and lives down on Fremont, man i'm sure he's a car junky. But sadly it doesn't come up. Then his girlfriend / wife show up along with some friends and we continue to hang for another 30 minutes or so. Our little table has now turned into a party. And with all the wine in my system i'm feeling no pain. I just hope i'm coming across cool.

We say goodbye to our new friends and we exchange numbers and e-mails and head upstairs to go to dinner. It's alot smaller than i would have though but the plates going past me look amazing. Christina starts with a caesar salad and i get the avocado, tomato and cucumber salad. Of course we order a new bottle of wine. A really good Zin from the Dry Creek area. You can almost never go wrong if it's from the Dry Creek. Our main course Christina gets the "fresh Maine Lobster tagiatelli" and i get the " cherry-orange glazed duck breast with roasted potatoes" and when they say potatoes, they mean 2. Both small golden perfectly cooked potatoes. Not to forget the plates. On the menu they gave us they even had to mention that the plates that we would be eating off of were all make by local artist "Feri Bijan". Man this was a cool place. I wonder if the Mill Valley one is a nice?

After the fantastic dinner it was out into the cold heading up to Geary again to catch the next Muni heading our way. We hop on the #38 and head (west). It's a double long bus and people are standing. Christina and i are pretty drunk and our bodies moves easily with the movement of the bus as we hold onto the pole above out heads. Just ahead of us this guy sits down and starts "diggin for gold" in a nose than seemed to have no bottom. All whole way across town he keeps at it with no shame at all. We jump off at the corner of Geary and Divisadero where we're transfering over to the #24 heading up the hill. We had to wait a long time. Something was cleary wrong with the bus but we didn't mind we were having a great time talking about the whole days events and all the nice people we ended up meeting.

The bus finally shows up with another right behind it. Then they make all the people in the front bus get out and swap buses. Truely something was wrong with that bus. So up the hill we go and into the thick fog. We get off on the corner of Divisadero & Jackson and walk on down to Green St and the house.

What a day, one that i'll always remember. Even after 12 years together Christina is still my best friend and it wouldn't had been as fun with anyone else.

It's a soy based product that comes in many different flavours and is kinda grewy and somewhat meaty, although there's no meat in it. It's one of my favorite things and i highly recommend it to the "adventurous" type

Hey Rich,
Glad you are having a good time in SF. Have you done the 49 mile drive? I'm always seeing the signs but never actually done it. One of these days.

Rich, there is also a really nice restaurant/bar on the top floor of the BofA building. I think it's actually the tallest building in the city and the views are spectacular (but if you're afraid of heights it might not be as enjoyable...). I believe it's called the Carnelian Room; I went there for brunch on my b-day a couple years ago and really enjoyed it.

That guy Brian and his wife Anne just got done doing that yesterday. He said it was pretty cool but kept hitting pocket after pocket of really bad traffic. Which in turn took away from the full on joy of the drive. We talked about it and decided it would be perfect to do on scooters sometime.

I always though it would be fun to do a midnight timed run of the 49 mile drive, a scooter rally sounds good too, although I think it uses some fairly fast and busy roads

It takes about four hours -- that's without a single sightseeing stop -- to drive."

sounds like a challenge to me......

starting at City Hall on one minute intervals at 11:00 PM.......

you'll have to excuse me, I've been reading Broack Yates' Cannonball book, its messin with my mind!

Day 5: Wednesday

Well it been a fun filled morning. First thing when i got you i jumped on the computer and wrote the whole long Tuesday events part of the journal. It took me ruffly 3 hours. Then once Christina woke up we made coffee & bailey's with toast and an egg scramble.

I finished recording the DVD's i had rented Puni Puni Poemy & Memories, both anime films. Then it was time to call Pete and see about dinner tonight. Followed by a walk down the the restaurant to see how long it was going to take and to make revervations.

I put on my ESX Easy Street racing t-shirt and headed out. It took us about 20 minutes or so to get down there and all the while Christina was looking for a new shirt to match her own watch. Oh girls... i tell ya. You just got to love 'em.

When we got to the restaurant it was closed so i guess we'll just have to call later today. Christina really started getting serious about doing some shopping so i knew i had to get out of there. So i made a mad dash off to the nearest comic book shop, just two blocks up the road. Aaaaahhh relief at last. Granted i could have just stood around outside the fronts of each store waiting for her to come back out, but then i would start looking around and around and before you knew it i'd be just some creepy middle aged guy standing on a corner watching all the hot chicks walking by. Maybe if i was with some of my guy buddies and we were having fun looking and judging the girls but by myself i just looked weird.

The comic book store wasn't very good. But they did own some cool old collectables. But i still ended up getting two nice graffic novels. George Pratt's "Enemy Ace" which came out in 1990 but i had lost my and needed to own it again and i also got George Pratt's "Batman: Harvest Breed" copyright 2000. He's a very good painter and mixes mediums oils, inks etc...

Then i was lunch time and we thought (or i thought) we should try out Yoshida-ya for lunch before going there tomorrow for dinner and spending alot more money. Let's just say i was very happy with their sushi. And their green tea was very good.

We picked up a few more DVD's and headed home. I rented Returner (a japanese live action sci-fi film) and Tokyo Godfathers (anime).

Oh crap!!! I just looked over at the DVD's and instead of Returner i have The Recruit. Damn i hate blockbuster. Not letting you have the covers when you leave the store. Hell i grabbed the film that was behind the case for Returner. Now i have to go back.
