Well I was supposed to be going to a party on Treasure island tonight but I'm stuck at a friends house playing matchmaker with our cats.
I was cooking some potatoes for dinner when I noticed a bizzare odor. I went out of my bedroom to discover my entire house filled with smoke! Gas was pouring out of the temperature valve and had ignited under the stovetop on one of the pilots. I managed to get my cat out first of all and ran to my meter to shut off the gas. When I got the gas company guys to get around to me they were blown away that the whole place didn't go up in flames. There were burn marks all over the stove and up the side along the cabinets.
What I want everyone to get out of this is; know where your gas meter is and how to shut it off. If I hadn't had my wits about me this wouldve been a much more solemn tale.
The house is too full of smoke and carbon monoxide, so I shouldn't be there until at least tomorrow. I'll try to get you guys some pics but i only have Internet from my iPhone currently. Hope you all have a safe fun saturday night. I'm going to stay in and make sure my kitty is ok, she's still panting.

Holy dick batman!
Wow, I'm glad you are here starting threads, because that is just right out scary!
Good job on the safe evacuation...and I hope you and the kitty have a nice night out. Not only that, but return to a safe house tomorrow.
EDIT: I actually have a pipe wrench teathered to my gas main...a little something I learned during the quake back in '89!

Crazy glad you made it out and still had your wits. But one of the first things i did when i moved into my current place was to find where all the shut off values were because you never know!
*looks for gas meter in her apt*
I hope your kitty is OK!
I slept thru the '89 quake at the ripe old age of 4. I bet I just made a bunch of people feel really old

I think I was 12 at the time...but I don't feel old...
good advice, EVERYONE should have a gas main wrench on a cable next to their gas regulator (the big gray thing with dials on it).
I also have a earthquake cutoff valve, if you own a house, its well worth the cost to put one on. This is a unit that has 3 steel ballberrings in it. In a quake they drop into the valve body and cut the flow of gas to the house. You can reset them with a magnet.
