Just needed to vent.Took my car to ATP yesterday to get a baseline dyno run and on the first pull it pinged on me around 4K
I did one more run and this time peak power and torque was the same but the whole graph was shifted higher into the RPM range and the car was running richer. MY car is completelly stock except for a a CAI. I went home and removed my cold air intake and I'm going back on Monday to get it dynoed again, this time with stock air box and my new borla hush system. Hope there's no pinging this time.

"pinging" is the same a detonation, which is, I understand, when the fuel explodes either earlier or later than it is intended to. Either way it isn't good for horsepower or the engine and is an indication of something else wrong in the tuning.
[please correct me where I'm wrong]

That's is what I've always thought it has meant. Hope with eveything back to stock except for the exhaust that there will be no more pinging/detonation with my car. I'll post results from my second dyno with the exhaust next tuesday.

Do they use a fan atop your top-mount?
Detonation is an uncontrolled ignition of the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder. The normal ignition is a controlled burn with a flame front that originates from the area around the spark plug (obviously). Detonation is more of a localized explosion that is induced by hot spots in the combustion chamber or charge air temperature that is too high. It is something like striking the piston surface with a hammer blow, often long before it reaches top dead center.
One problem is that if the engine is modified but not tuned correctly, the driver may not hear detonation at wide open throttle over the sound of the exhaust. This is one area where a dyno has a tuning advantage.
There's probably more information on the web that is more detailed when it comes to turbo engines.

Yeah they had a fan on top of the intercooler. I've tried to listen for the detonation sound when I've been drving around but I could never hear it. When it was on the dyno I heard it immediately, and I could also see what seems like the car dipping in power when the detonation sound was heard, I'm assuming the ECU kicked in right away. Plus on the dyno grapgh the second time around the car ran richer.

The ECU is compensating for the engine knock by running richer. It may also have backed off on ignition advance.
Can ATP print you out other curves from the dyno runs? Shiv at Vishnu Performance usually hands out the standard HP vs Torque vs RPM graphs but I also asked him if he could print me another graph with turbo boost vs air/fuel ratio, which he cheerfully did. He even asked if there was any other parameters I was interested in seeing while he was at the keyboard but nothing else popped into my head at the time. I wish I would've asked for one with Ignition advance vs Torque vs RPM, too.

I got the standard HP Vs Torque Vs RPM and at the bottom of the graph I got there is also an Air/Fuel Ratio vs. RPM. I'm gonna post the results up in the EJ20T performance forum when I get the results next monday. Some ppl wanted to see if there is any immediate gains with the borl hush cat back installed. Should I ask for any other types of graphs? I wasn't planning on tuning my ecu till I had some more engine mods, but if it pings again on monday I may just get some ecu tuning done. I first want to get some new suspension pieces but my pinging issues, if any, come first.

Where did your AF ratio get rich? mine dumps from 14 to off the chart between 2700 to 3200 rpm, BTW our ECUs do not add fuel when they hear pinging(unlike the EVO) they just pull timing

when I dynoed on Sat at ATP with the rest of the guys, EVERY wrx that was running stock ECU would hit 11/1 by 5k, so I dont think your too far off, since mine was an STi I thopught I was having probs since mine would bottom out by 3200

make sure you reset your ecu before the next time you go to the dyno. import tuner did a dyno run on a supra and got 11 extra horsepower from just resetting the ecu. folks at AEM say that when your car pings, the ecu records it and wouldnt perform as well because it delays the timing and keeps it that way.
try running some octane boosters.
