My attempted '03 Cobra purchase at a roseville dealer...

So today my friend and I went to Just Better Cars in Roseville to buy this white 2003 Cobra they have. We drove all the way there today from Chico, after talking to the guy on the phone for half an hour yesterday. My friend and I get there, we are looking at the car for about 10-20 minutes, I ask the salesman Chris if he needs a copy of my license for me to drive it, he says "sorry we dont allow test drives on this car unless you are serious". I told him, as he already knew I drove 2 hours to see this car specifically, obviously I am serious. "Sorry I can't just let a 400hp car go off of my lot" he stated. "The only way you can drive this car is if you buy it." "We can sit inside, you can sign all of the paperwork on the car and you have my personal guarantee that you will love this car, or I will refund your money" I was like are you joking me? Why am I going to buy the car without test driving it?? Sorry sir but with this car thats just how it goes.. I said well I guess you don't want to sell a car today now do you... He said well I guess not...

I could understand if I was some teenage punk kid or I drove up in some POS, or if this was an expensive car......... I drove up in my 2006 X-Runner, its a new truck! Come on, the car was $27k thats not that much money! Before I bought my truck they let me take the thing overnight with just a copy of my license! No other dealer has a problem with my driving a $60k superduty that I could do a LOT more damage in.

Well it turned out after really looking the car over and hearing it run it was a POS the motor had a slight tick which meant a max of 20k miles left on the motor , but still that just ruined my day! Driving 4+ hours and wasting the whole day for nothing!!!!!

if you pull up in a nice car they'll let u do anything. i went to roseville mitsubishi in my cousins new supercharged range rover and they even let me test drive a brand new evo ix mr. a lot of dealerships wont let younger people drive their cars because they assume that they just want to take it out for a ride with no intent of buying it. when i went to check out the sti they wouldnt let me test drive it either but when i went back with my older (40+) cousin they let me drive it.

I work at a Ford dealership and if someone comes in saying they are serious about a car (even one of the Shelbys) we would talk price before doing anything as the cars are brand new. If someone was serious about our used Hertz GT-H though and they came in looking at least reasonably presentable we would definitely let them drive it before price negotiation.
With this car being used it definitely was a red flag with him not wanting you driving it. He obviously wanted to hook you on the idea of owning the cobra first as he would then have a better chance of you overlooking the problems associated with it that you would find afterwards.
Sorry about such a rough experience...just though I'd offer an insight of what he was probably trying to do.

you should buy the GT-H....

If they're anything like the last one's they'll only go up in value...and that's saying something for a ford.

tell him u need to talk to someone else because obviously you are too small time for me.

I drove an 03 brand new vert from the dealer when i was thinking about buying one. The ladie freaked out and called me names and said I was lying and scamming here b/c i wanted a coupe to drive (what id be purchasing) and the vert was a slow pile of **** stock relative to my cheap 95 built 5 liter that woulda smoked it.

She was the most heinous ***** i've ever encountered. We just left and I told the manager before I bounced that the truth of the matter is I had the site draft for a loan with me and could have purchased that day and had planned to until this..

that being said i ended up keepin my stang and getting a wrx at the time which thru me into subies where im plenty happy to be.

Ford just isn't the same quality and their cars corner like ****. They feel like *** on the limit of adhesion.

Tell that guy to **** off, and WTF are you doing. Go to autotrader and cars.com search for cobras with low *** mileage. I saw one sell for 26.5 I wanted to buy it. had almost 3k on it. plenty of awesome deals cheaper to fly and go pick it up

lol, u gotta know how to play the game. Phone ahead, tell them specifically that you are coming for a test drive. i test drove the G37, Tl-S, IS350, and 335i all in one day, no problems with getting any of those car even tho im pretty young and i wasn't dressed nice at all. u just have to show them ur honestly in the process of buying and am serious, body language plays a big role in this. but most likely from what hear, the guy's just a douche and new to sales.

the only way someone young can really get any where with a dealership is if they have a couple thousand in cash, or a cashiers check for a down payment.

Hey hey hey there buddy... Not to be a dick but I have had a whole bunch of different cars and my 03 WRX had the most problems.... I blew trannies left and right, then engines, then diffs. That wasn't even being really really hard on it, I have had sever Mustangs, beat the ever loving **** out of them, intentionally tried to brake something, and was unsuccessful... Don't get me wrong I had a blast with my WRX, it handled the best on uneven/bumpy roads, but for the 3 years I owned it nearly 2 of them the car was broken. Not totally the cars fault, some jackass mechanic Kevin that was recommended to me by a member destroyed my first motor and second trans. I believe he opened up a shop in the bay somewhere doing STi swaps or something... Not trying to hate on the suby's I loved mine when she was running....I don't really know where I was going with this.......... Oh yeah I called him the day before and told him that I was specifically coming there to inspect/purchase this car. I was going to trade in my paid off truck on it and had cash in my pocket...

----------slow04wrx----------
I would absolutely LOVE to purchase one from craigslist or from a fellow member of CaFords BUT I am trading my truck in on it so I have to go through a dealer, unless anyone where wants to buy a Modded 06 X-Runner that is... Oh and as far as the handling they actually handle pretty well, the non independent GT's and V6's dont handle as well over a variety of surfaces. Its like my X-Runner, it handles AWESOME on smooth pavement, but if there are imperfections in the road around a turn you will start skipping because of the solid axle.

----------OneManArmy-------

I don't want a GT-H, I am not a big fan of the new body style and they can't handle the power I am going for. The only 2 Mustangs that can handle 1000hp to stock internals are the 03-04 Cobra and the new Shelby GT500. I don't want the Shelby because of the lack of interchangeable parts from other year Mustangs, and the fact you have to put completely different brakes on them to have slicks/skinnies, not to mention the price tag...

---------steeda331------------
You betcha! I love all cars...well everything except Chevy..... haha
