Multimedia question

I figured it couldn't hurt to post this here, maybe somebody out there can help...

I'm trying to analyze video clips in a software program, but certain file types don't want to open in that particular program... Is there an easy way to change the file type from 'windows media audio/video file' to 'movie clip'? The former won't work bet the latter will. I'm not good with this crap- please help me out...
