Moving to San Francisco

I am moving to San Francisco for law school in the next week or so, and I have a few questions if anyone could be so kind as to answer.

1 - What neighborhoods do I want to live in/avoid? My school is in the Tenderloin, and I will avoid that. Inner Sunset/Richmond, Sunset, Richmond, and North Potrero seem attractive.

2 - What is reasonable to pay for rent? Seems ~$1200-1400 is the going rate for a one bedroom.

3 - Do I ever get to park/drive my car? People say it will soon be mass transit for me.

Thanks

I live in the sunset and i love it because it's quiet and there is a lot more parking than Richmond and North Potrero. The rent you mentioned is about average for a place in the city. I drive my car eveywhere. There are a few areas that i would avoid if possible but once you know your way around the city, you can drive and park anywhere.

Hokusal: Thanks for the information. Seems Sunset is the place to be, as everyone suggests it.

Sunset is an excellent place to live. I would avoid Tenderloin as you have mentioned, I've seen too many things happen there. BTW are you attending Hasting? I tell you this though, if you're planning on driving, beware of how scarce parking is here in certain areas. Sunset is cool because it's all residential and often there are spaces, but move onto the "shopping" areas, such as Irving street, you're not going to find poop.

Sunset: pretty safe all around, boring as hell (unless you're a mall rat). Parking is pretty good there. There seems to be more car theft and vandalism in the Sunset though, when compared to the Richmond. Most cloudy and coldest part of the city.

Richmond: not as safe and quiet as the sunset, but crime is still quite low. Parking is a bltch if you don't have a garage/driveway. Its a pain in the *** to get anywhere from the Richmond... but its got Geary street w/ tons of shops and good food. Its a lot like the Sunset without the boring. Rent tends to be cheaper in the Ricmond. Second only to Sunset for bad weather.

Mission/Protrero: Good spots and bad spots, but over all lots more crime than the Sunset or Richmond. This is where the Oakland car thieves come to. But its fun, fun, fun in this parta town. All good food, clubs right over in SOMA (South Of Market Area), lotsa culture, parking can be a MEGA BlTCH depending on the area you're in. Great weather through most of the year... I think its God's way of blessing the poor

YeahI also recommend that Sunset is a better place to live in SF. but if u are commuting to school in Tenderloin, do yourself a favor, use a scooter its easier to find parking in scooter than a car! haha

If you live in the Sunset, you might as well live in the Suburbs. In fact, it takes less time to get to downtown from Berkeley than it does from the Sunset.

My step-brother goes to Golden Gate Law School and lives in El Cerrito, right by the Bart Station. He can get to class in a half hour.

I live on Potrero Hill which is nice, has the best weather in the city and plenty of parking. It's kinda expensive though (I pay $1550 for a 1 bedroom, but I have a Garage)

Oh yeah, and as far as your car goes, you're only going to want to drive it out of the city, driving in the city sucks.

I just moved to Noe Valley. Great, safe neighborhood, next to the Mission, easy access to 280 and 101, and cool restaurants. Parking is variable depending on how close to 24th you are. My housemates and I specifically targeted Noe Valley over Portrero because it was closer to fun stuff. Good luck!

Yeah, my lease is up in October and I want to move to the Mission or Noe Valley because Potrero is a bit seperated from everything.

I gotta have a garage though.
