680 is nice if you can get to the grade around 9:30 so the carpool lane is available to everyone. I get on at the 580/680 intersection and get off on Calaveras. Usually there is no stopping. Earlier there is often some congestion somewhere between 84 and the grade.
The problem is if you need to get over to 880 area, there are a crapload of people who need to get into Santa Clara. YOU DO NOT want to crossover at Mission if you don't have to. I used to live in San Leandro and do the same commute, except down 880, and the traffic was so bad south of Automall, I'd take Mission over to 680 to go the last few miles to Milpitas.
Most of those people are getting off at 237. South of the merge things are okay, but I've seen Mission backed up from the signal light at the merge all the way back to the intersection with Warm Springs. You don't want to do that.
Whoever told you to get off on Landess was giving you sound advice. Calaveras works too, but it gets congested as well, sometimes Calaveras is bumper to bumper from the 680 offramp all the way to Abel or even to just before 880.
I never see Montague, but I imagine it's better. Nothing going west in that area is very nice though. Montague has carpool lanes on it for a reason. But if you can be in later, then it's probably not much of an issue.

that commute isn't as bad as it sounds. You can actually fly through most of that area of 680.
As for getting to 880. landess and calaveras are the way to go. Mission interchange is the devil. I used to live on it.
You can also get off at scotts creek and take milpitas blvd. or damn it....whatever the name of the road on the otherside of the freeway is. plenty of little ways to go to stay off the major interchange.
my room mate works over where you're going..machine shop.

another thread about 680 commute

680 isn't bad at all -- it used to be a nightmare during the tech boom. I take it everyday -- castro valley to milpitas in about 40 minutes.

Thanks guys for the tips and the link. I guess I need a Valentine One by reading the other thread =)
Ya, I know about the 680 -> 880 after mission... it's off Scott's Creek -> Milpitas Blvd -> Dixon Landing -> 880... or Milpitas Blvd can get to Calaveras too...
I work around Trimble @ First so I guess I'll just go 680->Landess/Montague =)
Thanks!

i live in danville and i work in fremont off the automall exit. in the mornings its not too bad, it takes me bout 30 min to do my commute. but when you're coming home, i dont know whats wrong with people, its like they dont wanna get home fast or somthing, but it takes me an hour almost to get home on the same stretch of rode... so go figure. like everyone said, the morning isnt so bad, but be prepared to play yourself some good tunes on the commute home.
