Downtown SF is a ****hole to live in unless you consider the above fine quality of life.
QFT.

I think that's the tradeoff in living in the bustling parts of any major metropolitan city in America: sacrifice comfort for convenience.

I don't think the OP was being blatantly homophobic in his post, perhaps just a little ignorant (not necessarily his fault either as we have a very unique culture here in the SF Bay Area that many outside of the region don't understand).
In attacking the OP, aren't you becoming the very thing that you disdain so much? -- namely, the bigot that jumps to conclusions?
I understand where you're coming from, but the worst thing that any of us minorities can do is to become that which we hate, right?

Unlike many other BAIC'ers, I think that you can be reasonable in your own way, that's why I took the time to post this.

I'll admit, my OP comment regarding Castro could come off as offensive, but I didn't think it was that bad. I'm not from NorCal, nor do I know much about it...I just hear jokes about the Castro area and SF being heavily populated with gays all the time that I expected someone to joke on here and advise that I live in Castro.

Sorry for hurting your feelings.
But I guess I'm just a bigoted-asshat-azzhole that doesn't know any better.
No no, your both right I was on edge, tired, and took it way the wrong way. I will openly admit I was in the wrong and I am sorry.

OP: take a look in san leandro, and that area. You can get good apartments and houses in the area for rent well under what most areas are. Its a pretty safe area, low crime, and BART is just a 20-30 minute ride into the city.

Here you go. Great area, quiet, and close enough to downtown to get there in 10 min by motorcycle, 15 by bike, and no more than 20 by bus.

1500 w/garage.

That spot caught me off guard Sunday morning at 4AM coming back from SF. I was on the inside lane doing around 80 when the center lane became an inch or two lower and ground.

You could always get a prius and carpool stickers and keep out of traffic that way.... (did I just say that? F*** Prius'... )

Yes, the bay area in different areas gets pretty ghetto and dangerous. In any case, it's a great city, with a lot of nutty stuff compared to the rest of the world (seriously). Besides more gays, the city is the one that is most liberal and changes things. Taxes are high, etc. So be prepared to pay $$ for simple things. I know in San Mateo a buddy on here pays for cable, and gets taxed by the city even more, cuz it pays for wifi around the city. Little things like that all add up, enjoy your stay. I'm not much of a city dude myself, but not much of a ranchy kinda guy either. I enjoy my stay in the east bay.

Oh WOW, near downtown, pretty nice looking, AND a garage? For $1500? Not bad!

Yeah guys, I know the Bay Area is very different from many other places. I know I'm gonna be pinchin pennies for a while, and I know I'm gonna have to adjust to being around a more diverse group of people. I'm not exactly very liberal in most of my views and beliefs too, so I guess I'll just have to keep my mouth shut most of the time when I first get up there. Whatever I gotta do for this job...one I've been applying for for about a year now.

i reread my post. i meant that MUNI was spotty, not necessarily BART. BART seems to have far less delays than MUNI.

I used to live pretty close to that on Parker between Turk and Anza - the USF/Panhandle area is pretty decent. It's by no means fancy, but you'd be hard pressed to find a more convenient, centrally-located neighborhood. That place is right next to Geary and Masonic, so you've got Trader Joes and Safeway nearby. Plus, being close to Geary can be beneficial in getting you both downtown and out to the beach in a reasonable timeframe. Just south of there is Haight street, just northwest is Clement street which has tons of awesome food and cool stores. If you need area restaurant recommendations, let me know! And yeah - $1500 is a very good deal for a 1BR with a garage inside city limits.

Ah, I see. Good to know.

Hey man, that Google Padmapper site in INSANE.
I've never heard of it until you mentioned it, and it is purely genius.
When I first looked at it I didn't know it was directly linked with CL.
It's such a pain to search apt's on CL when I don't know the names of areas in SF. With this site I can filter price/amenities/garages/etc. and then just pick according to location on the map in relation to my where my place of employment is located. Friggin AWESOME!

I've found so many places that I like in downtown and in DC/SSF with this site.

i love it so much <insert LOLcat picture>. there's a couple of other sites that do something similar, but padmapper is by far the best. i'm semi-apt hunting too.
