Motorcycle insurance and classifieds
Baic riders, two questions...
Who has good, cheap motorcycle insurance in the Bay Area? I've gotten a couple of quotes from the usual suspects (progressive, gieco, etc.) but are there decent motorcycle specific ones you could recommend? What are you mid-20's riders paying monthly for a super/sportbike?
What are some decent and local cycle classifieds. I've been checking Craig's List and Cycletrader. Any others you can recommend? I'm having a hard time finding a good, used bike of the model I want so the more places to look the better.
I realize I could ask these questions over on BARF but I'm only a lurker over there and would appreciate some help from a group I'm familiar with.
I'm a bike n00b, as in this will be the first I've personally owned, so use lots of lube and go easy on me.
Thanks!

yeah Im lookin too, but I think everyone local hits up the barf classified or CL. What bike are you lookin for? Im leaning toward a SV650
whats up fella's
call up AIS. auto insurance specialist. they are a broker. they get 30 different quotes and give you the best one. they quoted me 406 a year for full coverage through State Farm. its pretty damn good.
check out the classified section on BARF
short for Bay Area Riders Forum .com
www.bayarearidersforum.com they have great parts/gear and bikes for sale all the time. all private party.
sv650 is a great bike, i highly recommend it.

i found my bike on craigslist.....it took me about 3 months of lurking on craigslist, cycletrader, and barf. As far as insurance, i went with progressive since my car is insured by them. Im pretty sure im getting ripped, but i cant complain about progressive. I'm not a member of barf, but i stroll around there for great topics like motorcycle insurance. You can also check their motorcycle forsale, most of the time they gove barfers discounts.
good luck on finding the bike that you like!

state farm and allstate i think gave decent rates. I went with an off policy brand and payed about 90/month for a new 600rr.
I'm going to search around now that I am buying an old school 86 vfr. I'm hoping insurance will be cheaper on the old bike despite the higher cc's.

If you're a total bike noob, see if you can get a friend who knows about bikes to go with you when you check something out through CL or other classified to help make sure you're not getting ripped off. A lot of times if the deal looks too good to be true, there's probably something wrong that the owner's not disclosing. Pre-purchase inspection is also a really good idea, costs maybe ~$100 at a reputable shop and could save you a lot of headache in the long run.
Motojava's also a really good shop to buy from. You won't get a super deal, but the guys running the place are super honest and put tons of work into making sure anything they sell isn't a lemon. You can check their used bike stock online: www.motojava.com
State Farm will probably get you the best rate and service. However, when I called them for a quote, they told me they don't do motorcycle only. You have to also insure your house, car, etc with them. I dunno if it was just that one broker, but I ended up going with Geico because I get a group discount through school. $350/yr with full coverage for an SV650S.

Allstate don't insure motorcycles any more. They will renew existing policies, but are not taking on new business.
State Farm are good - particularly if you want comprehensive/collision. However, IIRC, they want GDD and may have an age restriction.
McGraw were very good for me as a new rider. Very cheap rates for liability coverage although they are a bit quirky to deal with.
I have heard good things about Geico.
Progressive are generally horribly expensive, but I have heard that, on rare occaisions, they give a good quote.
When I started mc, I had McGraw. They used to charge me $140 a year for liability on a Suzuki Katana 600. I then upgraded to an F4i and decided I wanted full coverage. At this point, State Farm became the better option. I now pay around $400 a year for 150/300 comp+collision - I am 39 though, so you will probably get hit a lot more for your youth.

I have heard this before - maybe it is a broker thing. My bike is the only thing I have insured with State Farm. I have my car+house with Allstate, but they won't take the bike. I would switch to State Farm, but they were over 2x the cost of Allstate for covering the WRX.

I had Gieco with my Harley. They were way less than others and cut the rate by 10% after 12 months. I originally had Mercury and they were $$$ compared to Geico. I had only just gotten my M license. I way paying 3 payments of $92 on a $19,000 bike. not bad at all!

Thanks for all of the input guys.
It may not be a popular choice for some, but I'm shopping for a Buell Firebolt XB12R 2004-2007. Wanting a Buell is just another reason BARF isn't much help.
