There's a general policy that no information will be released about accident victims to strangers. If you call the hospital, they will invariably say the person was fine.
Last year, I was riding home to Santa Cruz on one of my bikes and a rider came screaming off the Los Gatos onramp, lost it in the slow lane, separated from his bike, slid across the fast lane into the concrete barrier, bounced off, and then got run over by the car in front of me, which hit him squarely and hard enough that it popped a tire and blew the airbags. I managed to stop in time and was the first person to the guy.
He was alive and concious. Broken hip, and shoulder, I think, and who knows what internal injuries. I sat and held him down (he kept wanting to get up) and talked with him until the ambulance arrived.
Never did find out what happened to him after that.

It took me a couple weeks to find out what happened. Very small bit in the paper at the end of a story about a bunch of people dying do to recent storms. And it turned out I knew someone that knew the guy...the one I almost ran over.
I called chp, hospitals..everything. No information anywhere. It's kind of unsettling to see that and not know what happened to the people. It's kinda natural to want to know what's up. Especially when you are directly effected emotionally by being at the accident. I didn't even know the girl died until I read the article.....but I figured it wasn't long.
