More Stereo feedback....

Ok,
So I posted earlier about looking for birchwood to work on a box with, and I have go material, design, and a workspace lined up to go ahead and build, but now I am stuck....
The woofers I want to drop into the box are a set of 8"s, to compliment and cover the midbass of the Image Dynamics IDQ 15" already in place. While if this works out, I will probably start building boxes for other dimension woofers, I want to go ahead and start small. I was thinking of going with JL 8W3's or JL 8W0's. Any feedback on anyone with some serious experiance with these woofers, or with a good alternate would be apreciated. Also, anyone know a place to nab a good deal on em? I stoped by my usual place and was pretty disapointed with the service and price they quoted.
TIA, -Cameron

have you tried to raise the low pass of the IDs? see if it CAN cover the midbass region?

usually, in cars (you have a sedan or wagon?), you have bump around 125 to 200 Hz as a result of a certain mode back there...

or are you talking about freqs higher than 200? say 200-600 Hz? then you may wanna change your front stage to have a bigger woofer...

Right now im runing a set of diamond components up front, and while pleased, they leave me a little...unsatisfied. I am probably going to drop them into kick panels in the floor, and drop a 6.5" or(gut the door) and drop in a 9" ID driver with MBQ Titanium tweets in the front. The other issue I have with only runing the single 15" is that while its deep and rumbly, it doesnt hit as fast nor is it as crisp response as you can get out of a properly tuned set of 8's.
PS: I have a wagon.

I would suggest three things before adding more speakers.

1) Try putting your 15's in a smaller sealed box- Call ID and explain your problem and see what they say but I am guessing that a 10-15% reduction in box volume will shift the Q of the box enough to give you the snappy bass you are looking for and less pronounced low bass.

2) More power, speakers will do great things with large amounts of good clean power.

3) Try a third octave EQ and more power.

Just some ideas but my suggestion for the doors would be to do maybe 2- 6" midbass drivers and then a 5' and tweet in the kicks. It's easier to fit and in my expierence sounds better. My store also sells JL and I would be happy to help you out but you have to come to the store.

Later

I suggest you quit screwing around and get something like this. =)

TITANIUM 951 COMP ELITE
http://www.phoenixgold.com/2004/tita...espeakers.html
ftp://208.187.38.55/Phoenix_Gold/Man...ium9manual.pdf
ftp://208.187.38.55/Phoenix_Gold/Man...entsManual.pdf

1.1" tweeter
5.25" midbass
9" midbass

The 9-inch midbass is only 2.52 inches deep and is designed to sit in a door or a very tiny (0.1 to 0.4 cu feet) enclosure.

Since it's a true midbass and not a "subwoofer" you should get much cleaner clearer midbass from it.

The matched subwoofer is also pretty sick (and like $750 )

I'm not quite sure why everyone is so hung up on JL. Get a set of Infinity Kappa Perfects.

I do not have a set of them, but I'm not plugging that particular product so much as I'm plugging the concept of getting a real mid-bass rather than a subwoofer. Better to have a speaker that's actually designed for the frequency range you're trying to reproduce.

On the other hand, I have been a big fan of Phoenix Gold ever since I got my first MPS-2240 (2 channels x 24 watts) and two Sapphire 12's. I can't remember my exact db, but I not only won the 0-50watt catagory but also would have placed second in the next wattage catagory. =) The quality of their stuff isn't quite as good as it was back then (no more gold-clad circuit boards), but their high-end product line is still good. I'd stay away from their low end stuff though.

That said, if a company like MB Quart makes a similar midbass, I'd expect it to be superior to PG.

Back in the day, everyone liked JL because their "4 ohm" woofers were actually 3 ohm, so you'd get a little extra power out of your amps. These days, I have no idea.

Edit: That was JL wasn't it? Damn, I don't remember for sure anymore...

Probably. I have been to the Tues and Thurs San Jose meets for the past three weeks. I no longer have a system in my car, just the factory crap. I have some problems with my right ear and don't want to make it any worse.

lol...

old skool components are better than current crop.

for example, sony dropped their mobile ES line in favor of that crap XPLOD.

soundstream went bankrupt and got bought by a middle tier company...

the individual arizona companies, (PPI, rockford, et al) now merged under one...

what happened to the 90's... lol...

these days, flash before form... quantity vs quality...

oh, to have a time machine...
