Modifying license plates illegal

Hm, so I just realized the license plate actually covers a significant portion of the FMIC - bad.

Illegal to drill holes in it?
Can it be relocated (I see cars like this sometimes) and if so, what are the guidelines?

Thanks for the link- I gues I'll just make a bracket and secure the plate to the IC piping on one side of the car (made a mistake - gutted my whole bumper lol...)

Actually, you have to pay for license plates when you first get them, therefore they belong to you. Cutting off the bottom of the plate however, that's not keeping the entire plate legible. As for placement, front and rear. You can drill holes in them to comply with the law regarding securely fastening them.

I have drilled hole in mine to fasten them to my front bumper without cutting into my front bumper. Go ahead and drill holes and move the plate upwards. I would go with a relocation kit to the side though.

no. you are only paying for registration fees, in which the plates are part of that.

but you dont own them.

that's why if you have vanity plates that are deemed offensive, they can get them back from you...

However, if you have custom plates you do pay something around $25/year to have them on your car. I don't know if that's to pay for the privledge of using a custom plate, renting the plate, or actually buying the plate.
