Mixing Gas?

Honestly, I don't buy it.

But, I am watching AOTS and they said you can cheap the gas station by getting half a tank of premium (93) and the other half regular (87) and the tank would balance at 90 which would be better then plus (89).

Does that work? Mixing up the gas to make 90?

wtf? since when did higher octanes boost lower ones? Wouldn't that mean changing the structure of the gasoline at a molecular level?

You need to stop listening to what the TV tells you.

you can- but

its not a straightforward arithmetic relationship;

http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/misc/Octanemix.html

in fact that is how most "mid" grade gas is done at the pump anyway;

http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....&page_number=2

but I can't remember the last time I saw 93 octane anywhere in California....

91 and 87 isn't going to do much for a car that wants 92+

Don't they have 100 octane at the gas station in Woodside at the bottom of 84 near 280? If memory serves, it's at a pump round the back of the station and you have to ask to use it.

But the point is- mixing your own premium using $6+ race gas isn't going to save you much in the big picture.

It might work but I wouldn't feel a need to do this. Doesn't save much. It is the same is gas additives.
