I have an 08 that is healthy. From reading a lot on IWSTI, it usually starts with being down on power, oil consumption and white smoke when removing the oil filler cap. Can only be positively confirmed via compression/leakdown test.

All years appear to be affected, even the 11s, but it's not widespread in terms of % of owners. The tune for all the GRs is awful from the factory, not just the 08s (they issued a recall for the 08 tune so most were "fixed" quickly, but the revised tune was also terrible). A guy named Law on IWSTI has a great thread on the issue, along with detailed stats on all the failures reported by members, check it out. Bottom line is no definite cause or correlation has been determined. Lots of theories, explanations and BS out there, but I've read it all, and there is no smoking gun.

If I were buying a used STi, I'd pay for a compression test as part of a pre-purchase inspection.

I'd second that, kinda hard to say what caused the issues for most, but i think people rarely admit to what they do wrong to a car, or list all the input parameters to their equation.
I think i'm lucky with mine, its an original tune 08, and i hit the rev limiter a few times before i reflashed. since then its been stg1 then GST tuned stg1 with close to 20psi peak & it runs like a champ. I never used any oil other than whatever the dealer put in & it never uses a drop.
If i were getting a used one then def compression check, and look in the IC for oil. mine is basically 'dry' but i have seen some terrible pics of oil in the IC's on unlucky cars...
