Manley "Graded" Pistons now available at EQ Tuning!

As some of you may know, Subaru blocks come from SOA with A and B grade cylinder bores which can be miss-matched in a single block. A and B refers to slight variations in cylinder bore size and Subaru uses A and B pistons accordingly. This variance in bore size posed a problem when installing new forged pistons without boring/honing the cylinders because most forged piston manufacturers only offer one 99.5mm size. For this reason, we have never offered a "drop-in" piston engine in the past.

Recently Manley came to the rescue by creating A and B graded pistons to match the two sizes that come from the factory. We have measured and clearanced out a few sets of these now and have found them to provide nice consistent piston-wall clearances. So with this new option, we will now be offering brand new built engines without boring/honing the cylinders.

This has two main benefits. First, since the cylinders do not need to be bored for an oversized piston, we will retain the full thickness of the factory cylinder liner. This means a stronger overall cylinder wall that is less likely to warp and go out of round when running high boost and power. Second, our prices for brand new built engines will drop significantly because we will be saving on the machine work. I will be putting together the final pricing for this new offering over the next couple days and will release it next week.

Finally I'd like to say that the quality of Manley pistons is really nice all around. They come with offset wrist pins to decrease piston slap, and all pistons come with coated side skirts. I'm very happy to have this option as I believe it will be really beneficial for a lot of folks.

Thanks

Wait..so the blocks don't need to be bored to run 100mm pistons?

Glad you are supporting these pistons. I myself got bashed on for going with the drop in Route

New block with this setup is probably the most reliable route for a power platform setup

Good write up Ed

The point is that these pistons come in two variants (A and B) of the stock 99.5mm size to match the slight variance in the factory bores. So the block would not be running 100mm pistons but rather stock size pistons matched to the specific factory cylinder bore.

We will still be offering our standard rebuild services using 100mm pistons with boring/honing when starting with a used block.

Thanks

This is the only correct way to do a drop-in piston motor. The problem previously is that people would just take off the shelf 99.5mm pistons and put them in a factory block which has variances in the cylinder bores. Some would get lucky and others not so lucky. With these graded pistons, all the clearances are correct. We also go a step above by measuring the clearance on every piston before install.

I agree that starting with a new core and using these pistons is the most reliable route since you retain the full thickness of the cylinder liners. That being said, we don't just buy assembled stock shortblocks and pull out the pistons to replace with these. All of our brand new blocks start with new OEM case halves, new OEM crank, new rods (OEM or Manley), King bearings, and Manley or CP pistons. So all of our blocks are still fully bluprinted and stage 1+ blocks are still balanced as well.

Thanks

It's going to be around $4200 for the stage 2 block which is about $500 cheaper that current. Ill get pricing up for the other blocks next week.

Hey Ed, I am sure you are aware that Manley also offers a 99.55mm piston now

Yep I saw that as well although I'm not sure we'll be using them. I might experiment with a light hone on a used block to see if we can dial it in to use the 99.55's. My only concern is that most used blocks have cylinders that are out of round or tapered enough that a light hone will not straighten them out.
