i took these pictures like 6 years ago 

there are area's east of livermore/east of the lab that are very dark.
this is the spot i went http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=e...5269&z=14&om=1
but you can go further down the roads a bit to patterson pass, and goto the place where they call it the "windy spot" at the top of the hill before it starts going downhill. there is a spot to pull over and park, but it's pretty windy up there

there is also a meteor shower the 13th with about 100 or more an hour http://www.space.com/spacewatch/mete...wers_2007.html

i used my 10D, external trigger, and a 300mm IS 
i don't remember speeds since it was so long ago. but it needs to be pretty quick since the moon is moving and you'll get a lot of blurr
