I think that might be old if it's in Germany.
That really happened in GE - Munich, a bunch of Army guys, went to a local pub, always in their tank, and the pub keeper kept the beer outside in the back (it's winter) and one of the guys kept the pub keeper talking while the other three raided the back....the pub keeper figured out who had ripped him off and the next time the same guys came back the pub keeper let the guys drink for free while he and an old army buddy of his stole the GI's tank.
He then spent the next 3 months cutting it up into little pieces and sold the whole lot to a metal recycling plant - who noticed the quality of material and notified the local US Army base.
The GI's got something like consectutive 20 year sentences for dereliction of duty, theft and loss of governement property.
That was wayyyy back in 1986 ish.
