Question

How about a location? The "Bay Area" is a pretty big place. North, South, East or West? City? County?

from the link...

Lumpy was lost on July 27th, 2003 around midnight in Fremont. Only 10 weeks old. No collar, but there is a microchip between it's shoulder blades. He is 10lbs, a jack russell terrier/beagle mix. He needs certain shots ASAP. If found, please call (510)299-9242 and ask for Betty or (510)299-0976 and ask for Tom. Please keep an eye out. Email me at tomw820@yahoo.com if you have any questions. Pass this on please.

D'oh! I should've done a little more investigative work before asking such a question. Thanks Leo. On the other hand, isn't the microchip for locating the dog? If I see him up here in Oakland, I'll let 'em know.

no, the chip is good for transmitting within a few feet, maybe even less.

From what my vet told me the chip doesn't transmit squat. Its just ID that can't be lost, i.e. a collar can get ripped off. The dog ends up at the pound. The pound folks scan the chip, and up comes your info, info about where you got the dog and possibly vet info.

Like EM based security cards.
