If its not a trunking scanner at least. You will have wasted your money. No one uses the old systems anymore.
read up on trunked systems and digital systems now coming up. For anything that works now days your looking at spending at least $250-300
Otherwise you are not going to get much.

there are still a few agencies in the bay area not trunked.
granted, they are in the alameda county. and the county just started on a major upgrade due to the 800 mhz shuffling of all emergency departments anytime soon...
even my uniden BC-250 which is trunked and digital will not be able to pick up the new frequency assignments IF and when everyone starts on it...
minimum right now i would recommend to people is the GRE scanners:

some of the newer uniden ones claim to be flashable so it can work, but those GRE scanners are just so cool...

My uniden is flashable. I just upgraded it a bit ago.
Alameda uses a hex system. The SO office controls 90% of all radio traffic. Then leases the Hex's back to the citys. So there is allot more going on then a standard scanner will pick up.
I have two built into my car, Trunked / digital. And an older analog as a back up. As the older system doesnt get much anymore.

careful. uniden software sucks more than a dyson vacuum cleaner.
and yes, you HAVE TO PROGRAM your scanner via a computer these days.
what a shock it was to me, spending a few $$$$ for a scanner then spending about another $70 or so.
but it was all worth it.
