+1 Vmware

I have an entire network topology as a test lab (complete with virtual routers and switches, virtual firewalls) JUST built into one VMware machine with 12 NICs.

I actually even have some VMware images that are running INSIDE of a virtual windows server w/ vmware on it.

You can virtualize a virtualization ad infinium

Now, that's just twisted

VMWare is okay. Last place I worked at we used ESX and you could move running virtual machines between different physical machines without effecting whatever was running on them. Pretty slick.

We do the same thing - by the end of the year I expect to have about 150+ VMs running on a cluster of 16 physical hosts.

Ubuntu will be the most user friendly for you, and has a convenient gui for apt-get, the package manager. Its also backed by a huge community...the beta has hundreds of megs every hour almost worth of updates and bug fixes.

I have grown up using openBSD, freeBSD, and netBSD.. and gentoo linux and slackware..

I recently installed Ubuntu as a basic client OS.. and it works great. I never touch windows anymore.. unless I wanna play a game.
