Kudos to SOA...new goodies
Just received the new revised STi short block (they do this every other year or so) and to our surprise and joy, they're now adding Nitrided coated Cranks to the USDM STi motor. Before this was only seen on the JDM Spec-C Motors (207 motor).
Part # 10103AB910 (in stock at LIC)

Why Nitriding Steel is Cool!!
Nitriding is a surface-hardening heat treatment that introduces nitrogen into the surface of steel at a temperature range (500 to 550°C, or 930 to 1020°F), while it is in the ferrite condition. Thus, nitriding is similar to carburizing in that surface composition is altered, but different in that nitrogen is added into ferrite instead of austenite. Because nitriding does not involve heating into the austenite phase field and a subsequent quench to form martensite, nitriding can be accomplished with a minimum of distortion and with excellent dimensional control.
Principal reasons for nitriding are:
To obtain high surface hardness
To increase wear resistance
To improve fatigue life
To improve corrosion resistance (except for stainless steels)
To obtain a surface that is resistant to the softening effect of heat at temperatures up to the nitriding temperature

Just wondering. If I go hybrid with this sti block + ej20 head with all necessary stock emission parts and turbo, can that be carb or california legal? Or do you need whole engine to be legal?

yes it will pass smog and we do it all the time here
BUT you need supporting mods for this swap:
-turbo (at min STi or equivlant like VF34)
-injectors (at min 565cc but based on turbo size)
-Fuel Pump (walbro)
-EMS (Cobb AP is the way to go)
-Custom Tune (your choice)
