I had PacBell back in the day for work, and it always sucked. Never worked at my house in Los Gatos, or my sister's house in San Carlos, and was pretty mediocre everywhere else. Everyone else I worked with complained about it - and we all got pagers simply because PacBell sucked so bad. I had 4 different phones with that contract. Next was US Cellular, and it was great till AT&T bought them - then it sucked as bad as PacBell did. Now, AT&T/Cingular is pretty bad, but I have gotten used to it. Walking around, phone beeps - 4 new messages but it didn't ring once. Couple messages are people telling me they tried to call me 4 times and got "number no longer in service" which has been happening since Oct. I have had 1 Motorola flip phone which lasted 2 months till the antenna fell off. Then 3 Nokias, the current one is a 6820b and the service is still worthless. My g/f has Verizon and her phone always (and I mean always) works everywhere we go. If mine wasn't free thru work, it would be Verizon.

I'm on ATT GSM and have no troubles at all(actually I've been with ATT for years). I have the best service out of all of my friends. One of my friends was on old school ATT and I went to visit him in San Ramon. He had 0 signal bars and mine was completely full, he got a new free GSM phone and now has no troubles. They are not upgrading the old infrastructure at all, only the GSM network, so if you want better service get a new phone. They have several appealing phones you can get for free.

After they merged 95% of people say they get better service because there's more cell sites, well 95% of the people that are on GSM(Funny the rest of the world has been on GSM for years) When it was just ATT I had quite a few black spots on 17 between hamilton and Santa Cruz, now I make it all the way over the hill with service the whole time.

sorry to hear about your bad service, but this is the problem with cellular companies in the states. we dont have one "type" of provider, we have multiple competing companies on different platforms. everywhere else in the world they are on the GSM (global system for mobile communications) network, meaning they share one platform and have AWESOME service.
The only thing i can say is to get a triband cable phone and see how it works out. Triband means there are 3 (hence "tri") frequencies in which the phone and location you are in can choose for optimal peformance i.e. EGSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900. if you ever have a chance to travel to europe and asia you can bring your gsm triband phone there, go to a seven 11 and pick up a prepaid chip to use and you will see how "good" service is. hopefully the u.s. cell companies can catch up to the rest of the world. just my 75 cents.

ATT has been good to me so far. It's their phones, but that's another story.

ATT sucks ***, i've had them since they were cellular one. Their customer service is the worst ever. They had absolutely NO customer service for about 3 months. Then when they finally did answer phones and take calls, they made no attemp to correct the 3 months of sh*t that went on while they were down.

You'd think a large company that has their entire customer service system down for three months would realize this and go out of their way to ensure the customers are happy......nope.....not ATT, they actually went out of their way to NOT help.

I quit them shortly after. T-Mobile may not have the better phone service, but thier customer support *so far* has been nothing short of awsome.

heres an interesting fact... t-mobile is a european company that owns cingular who now owns at&t. maybe we are on our way to a true GSM network.

if you want a good triband phone your either gonna have to go to asian areas that sells phones (cash is king plus they give you car charger, headset for free) or go to http://www.expansys-usa.com/ before i get flamed for the asian comment, i know cuz i am asian

If AT & T's customer service was better, I wouldn't be as psychotic at this time. But to spend the better part of an afternoon trying (in vain) to make simple calls, and then to call and ask what the technical trouble is, and THEN to be told I need to buy another "perk" so I can use the phone and its service in a very simple manner.....it has pushed me over the edge, and somebody is going to have to answer for this. They KNOW their service/reception is unacceptable, why else would they come up with a scam like GSM? Profit, my friends, profit. If guys like me refuse to step up to the plate and fall prey to this scam, then we lose.....we still pay to use the system, but the system doesn't work. Or we can cough up $175. Or we can "upgrade", and how long will this "upgrade" live, before it too evolves into some useless gimmick that is basically nothing more than a stepping stone to the next gimmick "required" for the basic system to function AT ALL.

what a fu**ing scam.
