In all states, some type of experience-rating plan provides for a reduction in the employer’s tax contributions based on the employer’s experience with the risk of unemployment. ... The amount of the unemployment compensation contributions (taxes paid), the benefits paid by the state, and the employer’s payroll are entered by the state on each employer’s record. The benefits paid are subtracted from the contributions, and the balance of the employer’s account is divided by the average payroll for a stated period of time to determine the reserve ratio. Under this plan, the balance carried forward each year equals the difference between the employer’s total contributions and the total benefits paid to former employees by the state. The contribution rates are then established according to a schedule under which the higher the reserve ratio, the lower the tax rate.

unemployment benefits are complicated but its all funneled back over time

CAL congrats! wish you the best of luck going forward!

Most of the money for unemployment benefits comes from the employer...you know that right?

I understand where you are coming from...but he is not bragging about milking the system. I average 12 months worth of work in 4 of the summer months every year, and then I get laid off for 3-4 months. I consider it a welcome break, but I am still working, going to school, etc in the meantime.

Glad you've got a good attitude about the forced break. Sounds like it'll be a good "restart" on your employment direction.

BTW, unemployment is a piddling amount... I dunno how anyone can actually survive on that.

Take a month off but don't get in a rut and never go back to work.

Thanks for the kind words guys. It's great to have people to share with when I've got a lot on my mind.

I plan to keep busy and try to learn some new programs while I'm job hunting. I'm really going to check out my new opportunities carefully so I don't get stuck in the same type of position that made me unhappy in the first place.

Now time to move, file for unemployment, and transfer my 401k!

That's funny. My sister just told me her friend from Fairfeld got laid off. Small world. I asked her if her friend drove a Subaru and that was you. LOL. I told her about this post. Haha.

Cal,

SF is greater than FF. Enjoy my friend. I'm hoping to be moving out there at the end of next year.

I just recently left my job (I know, not the same as being laid off) to help me focus more on my studies and help me find out what I want to do in life. Also, that job was so stressful...

Anyways, it's actually quite good that you're taking such an event positively. Most people would be in shock and just temporarily become pessimistic. Hope it all works out.
