jacking up my WRX (questions)

So I finally gave in and bought a real jack and some jack stands.

I wanted to make sure I'm jacking the car up at the right point. I put a board between the jack and the car because it seemed like the thing to do.

Correct positioning?

I only ask because I hear some creaking that makes me nervous. I'm pretty sure this is the right position though.

yea that looks like the right position, i would be careful with that board though, it may slip a little, just watch when you jack it up.

Cool.

Why would it be creaking. FREAKS THE HELL out of me.

Seems to creak a little louder with each push.

For that jack point you really don't need that piece of wood. Just jack it up on the metal plate and you should be fine. Also the creaking is the wood..... all of the weight is on that one piece of wood...

Ohh yeah, I didn't think of that. Haha, I'm being slightly pedantic.

Thanks.

maybe he doesn't like ketchup. I use a smaller piece of wood myself. That looks a bit sketchy. As long as you use your jack stands correctly you will be ok.

IMHO a piece of wood is better because it evens out the weight slightly better than just using the 4 small tips on the jack.

Yeah, the creaking is most likely just the jack digging into the wood.

Once the car is raised to a level high enough to slip the jackstands underneath, use care not to support the car by the u-shaped brace that runs under the front end. It is thin gauge metal and will crush the instant the car's weight is lowered upon it. Instead, the jackstands can be placed under the front subframe itself, just aft of the u-shaped brace.

Do NOT use the piece of wood there!

Been there, done that, got the dent in the oil pan on my WRX from when it slipped
