Its now '06... 4 yrs for my '02 WRX... no smog requirment?

I bought my '02 WRX in March '02. I just got my '06 registration bill... no smog check required. Huh? 4 years, right? Or, maybe its supposed to be the 4th registration payment not including the original title year (which would then make the first required smog check for '07) or something like that? Is it in full calendar years and not exact years registered? Did I get lucky on someone's error?

Anyone other '02 owners get the same?

have an '02 and just got my registration renewal slip, which DOES NOT require smog either. i thought it was weird too, but I ain't complaining. my ride would pass, but saves me the hassle + $$$ of getting the check done.

well I think it has something to do with the last digit/character on your lisence plate.

I think its odd plate #'s get smogged in even #'d years and even plate #'s get smogged in odd #'d years.

I don't know where the letter T falls in though

Its because Arnold changed the smog laws. 2001+ model year cars are exempt for like 6 or 7 years. You just have to pay a smog abatement fee.

This is the same gub'ner that nixes exemptions for kits and replicas. Apparently some lobbyist out there has more $$$ than SEMA.

Guess I'll have to sell my WRX before '08 and get something else!

It got bumped to 6 years.

The abatement fee (which already existed) also got bumped from $6 to $12 (or something like that).

My 2001 WRX hasn't needed smog yet either. I think my car's first smog will be required for its 2007 registration renewal.
