The only reason the bugeye Impreza sold so well in the states is that it wasn't available here before. Most of the other international markets shunned the bugeye's and sales were quite a bit less than Subaru expected. At least from what I've read.

yup, our bugeyes will be but an overweight, underpowered footnote in wrx history...sigh...
Oh well in 3 or 4 years I am thinking that subarus will be the next DSM as the price of 02's falls under 10k. Built short blocks and heads will costs a couple thousand just like DSM's, and that will make me happy

A small, fast two-door hatch doesn't seem like a bad idea considering the success of the Honda Civic hatchback.
And beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Also that was a ridiculous press announcement: Subaru is just stating that they've seen Mitsubishi's new EVO concept car pictures and are going to make one of their model lineup more like that concept car. It's a lame idea to copy someone else but I'm sure Subaru will do it justice.

those pics dre posted are from the video game WRC3 (not available in the US). Anyways, in the game you can unlock an "extreme" version of the WRC car. These are pictures of the "extreme" version, and some artists renditions of what appeared in the game.
Funny thing, though, is that these pictures had to be okayed by Subaru before they were put into the game, so it might be a hint at what the next redesign could be.

sure, it's different...
I've owned a bugeye, and it reminded me of my old '68 BMW 2002.
I have an '04 STi now, and I love it too.
I am intrigued to see how the next Impreza pans out.
BTW, you're looking at a reverse hoodscoop, since there's a front mount hiding behind the grill...

Ohh wow.. it's like the bastard child of a Renault and a Focus in a Subaru WRC costume.
Blech. But, I have to say - while I am glad they are still selling and happy people like them, the newer versions just make me happier I got mine when I did. Funny, I hated the 'bugeye' when it came out. I started to love it when the '04s came out.. Maybe I will love the '04 in '06? Who really cares anyway.

Bugeye reminds me of Porsche, which is who Subaru's top engineers studied under shortly after WWII. And my dad's a Porsche fanatic so the similarity holds a special place for me.

"In the past, performance was a priority. Safety and then design were next," Mori says. "But at the time of the introduction of the new Liberty, we realised that design is as important as performance."
BTW, if you look closely at those designs, its the current model with a hypothetical front and rear end tacked on. Don't get your heart set on it looking like this.
