Just did a window regulator on a friends E46 today in 30 mins flat. We charge ~2hrs at the shop haha. Yes it rarely takes the allotted time the first time but the WRX plugs werent too bad. I bet the 6 cyl is bad.

I remember the 93-97 Camaros. Spark plugs were literally an 8 hour job.
That LT1 was so crammed into that chassis there was just no good way to get to plug #8

holy crap! how did you manage to pull the spark plug out if it's so cramped?

Honestly I enjoy working on subarus more than anything else, especially working on my own but then again I'm biased and I work at subaru. But I can't deny that working on my old integra back in the day was wayyyyy easier and also had plenty of room to work with. I can't imagine how people work on engine bays that are jam packed.

I disagree. Many people lack the time, space, and/or mechanical abilities to safely work on their cars. That doesn't mean they don't appreciate and enjoy them though. However, I'm not surprised by the simplistic nature of the remark given the source.

I dont think he's talking about the many who have a love for cars but little ability or resources. I think he's talking about a lot of the show/flashy car owners who have their cars mod'd to high hell or just buy a Ferrari for its status. At least that's how I feel about the comment.

Ferrari aside (working on your own car doesn't mean you don't have to pay for a Ferrari), I don't see how the two are mutually exclusive? You can't pay someone to mod a car to high hell, and also have a love for cars? Gotta go with VRT on this one, that's at best an incomplete statement.

I bet jay leno only uses a credit card for mostly show-type cars, but id consider him a "car guy"

Except an oil change I can do it in about 10-15 min. on the GF, maybe 20-35 min on the WRX without removing the plastic shroud.

Jay actually does work on his own cars, but he also has his own mechanics, so he is a car guy either way

I actually LIKE working on my cars. When I bought my first car my dad bought me the book for it and said "Here, fix it yourself." Dad's a heavy equipment mechanic so I had access tools, compressors, air tools, 6 ton engine hoist, etc... There was nothing I couldn't do. After many years of doing it myself though, I just got tired of doing some things. This pretty much sums it up:

Maybe it comes from growing up in a home with an Aerospace Engineer/Scientist for a dad, but it just enrages me when tolerances are poor. For it to be acceptable for a part to be 1/16" off, amazes me.

When I stopped working at shops, and being able to use their lifts, my desire to wrench myself pretty much died.
For me, it's worth the money to avoid my own frustration and anger when doing a car project.

BUT - I like going fast, so I'm still known to turn a wrench.
