I wanna rent shop space!
My buddy said that he thinks that there is a place in San Jose where you can rent shop space. Is this true? Or does anyone know of a place like this?
I was thinking about this recently too. I realized that any place that I consider to be safe enough to keep my car and tools is most likely way too expensive to be practical.
But good luck with your hunt, and let us know if you strike oil

The place I knew of was more of a rent by the hour type place, and you could use some of the place's tools if you need them (air tools etc)

Yeah, rent by the hour is what I was thinking too. I'm not sure how much warehouse/workshop type stuff goes for. Last time I was looking, retail/office was $1-2/sq-ft/month. I'd assume workshop stuff would be cheaper, but it still adds up.
what do u need to do ? how long do u need it for? are you expecting any kind of tools to be included in the rental? or just the space? How big space do u need ?
I might have a place for you.

I actually don't have any projects that REQUIRE a lift and specialty tools right now, but I'd just like to have this information for the future. There are some just general maintenance projects that I should probably do soon that a lift would make much easier. I wouldn't really need tools, just a lift.
My neighbor goes to some place around here where he rents space, tools, and machines for woodworking; I can't imagine that there is no place like this for cars.
Perhaps a lucrative business venture? Who's got some capital to invest?

Cost would be a big part of it. You would have to get everyone to sign into an agreement, say a per year fee. Some up front, and then a monthly pay in..
Say you get 20 people, put $500 down each, then $100 a month. even that 2000 a month wouldn't rent a very big space. Add into that cost of insurance, tools, alarm system, computer system (to track who has what day reserved) and so on..and your going to need 30 people at $200 a month to make it work.

Serious though- My old high school auto shop rents lift space to former students for $50 per hour and you can borrow tools. At least they did 8 years ago.

You can probably split rent with someone that owns a shop for a few hundred a month. We do. Under $500 for a HUGE shop. No lift though. Which is why I'm suggesting we take our game elsewhere.
