My friend is an idiot. Long story, but there are cliff's notes at the end.
So a friend of mine flew in for the weekend, and was staying at my house. We went to a Halloween party on Saturday night, and since I was designated driver and I don't really drink, she decided it would be a good idea to drink over a half a bottle of Jack Daniels by herself. Since she's from high altitude, she thought she was invincible or something...I don't know. Anyway, she attempted to walk down the stairs to smoke a cigarette, and fell down half the staircase, so I ended up taking her home. She seemed okay, she couldn't really walk, but aside from that, she was still breathing, and for some odd reason, not puking, so when we got home, I made her drink water and go to bed.
About an hour after I went to sleep (around 3:00am), I heard a loud slam. I looked up and noticed that my friend was gone, and my door was shut. I figured she just got up to go to the bathroom, so I decided to stay up and wait for her to come back incase she was sick or something. A few minutes went by, and she didn't return, so I got up to check on her and saw that the bathroom was empty. The light was on downstairs, so I went down thinking she was in the kitchen, but the kitchen was also empty, so I went back upstairs, and heard something coming from my roommate's room. His door opened, and she came stumbling out, and fell into the wall. I was sooooo mad at this point, so I dragged her back to my room, yelled at her for a minute, and made her go back to sleep.
After I was sure she was passed out, I went downstairs to turn the light off. When I came back up, my roommate was coming out of the bathroom, so I took the opportunity to apologize to him. He was pretty cool about it, understood that sh*t happens, people get drunk, no big deal. He actually thought it was pretty funny. He said he woke up, saw a figure in the corner and thought it was a ghost, and said that she was lucky he didn't start throwing fists because it scared the crap out of him. He also mentioned that he thought she spilled something in his room, but he wasn't sure...and said it wasn't a big deal and that he'd clean whatever it was up in the morning.
Next morning rolls around, and my roommate comes and knocks on my bedroom door. He asked about my friend, and then told me that whatever it was that she had spilled got all over his stereo, and now it won't turn on. My friend doesn't remember any of the incident, and denies spilling anything. No one saw a cup, and he claims that there were no cups on his desk, so we're still not sure what it was, but he seems sure that the stereo breaking was her fault, so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. I don't know him very well, but since I live with him, and it's partially my fault, I feel like I should at least help him out with buying a new one.
Cliff's notes: idiot drunken friend broke my roommate's stereo, and I'm helping him pay for a new one. He has a few specific ones in mind, and he is considering replacing it with nice computer speakers.
Anywho, do any of you guys work at a Best Buy or CompUSA or something similar, and could you possibly get me a deal? Thanks and stuff...

I have the Logitech Z-5300's and they rox my sox---- they aren't so great with MP3's while blasting (since .mp3's are like 1/10 the quality of a CD) but if i play a CD or a movie, they pwn. I can only Imagine the z-680's even more ownage!

Thanks for the replies guys (with the exception of Idvinag :P ), but I think he already has a few specific stereos/speakers in mind. He hasn't told me exactly which ones he wants though.
i was going to get the z680 but then again, blowing 200 on just speakers wasn't on my top priorities.
That system does sound great, if i had the money i'd buy it.
z680 +1

Many years ago I bought a Creative/Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 computer speaker system, comes with five speaks and the adjustable bass. I'm still using it to this day, it makes really good sound from such small speakers but then again I'm not a stereo buff and if it sounds good it's good to me. These old ones come with a little volume and fader **** that's really convenient and they're cheap now. Highly recommended on ebay if you're on a budget.

I have the Z-680s, and they are awesome.
but yeah, in this case I would replace the speakers, with comperable ones if the ones ruined were cheaper.
Get a less expensive set, or something used man...

Hmm, let me clarify. She broke his stereo, not the speakers, and he already knows exactly what he wants. I'm just looking for someone who works at a store that sells electronics who could possibly get me a discount.
stereo... what?
receiver, cd player, one of those all in 1 type setups?
there's a bose outlet store in gilroy that sells their refurb stuff.
or ask the person to wait day after xmas for the deal, return, etc...

For the money... don't get the Logitech speakers. They make great mice, but their speakers aren't all that great. Go with Klipsch, you'll enjoy them more - they cost just a bit more. If you're on a budget, go with the Altec Lansings... or if you must, go with Bose - equally as expensive as Klipsch, maybe even more expensive.

If you listen to music, you'll notice that there's a lot of air noise with the Logitech's. That's the main thing that turned me off was the air noise during silence.
