Sounds like tax time. Last year I did the same thing and bought a new set of wheels from a fella in Oceanside, and had him hold them until I went down for a wedding in San Clemente. Make an occasion out of the trip and you will be happiest.

These would be part of my tax return. So I gotta wait for that and the wheels I want are only available for pre-order right now. The site says they will be available January 2011 but considering it is the 24th, I dunno how spot on that date is.
Jeszie, I may take you up on your offer. But a trip to Magic Mountain is starting to sound really good.

Not to derail your road trip plans but I got a quote from someone on this page to ship 4 wheels and tires from Portland to Berkeley for $100.

I stupidly decided to use UPS since it was supposed to cost only $20 more and be less hassle for my friend. But UPS turned out to be more like $180 and a lot more hassle for my friend. All the shop has to do is put them on a pallet and wrap them in plastic.
Then you could spend all the driving time at Six Flags in Vallejo.

These aren't a private sale and the only shipping option that they offer is $340. That or free in-store pick up. I do find it to be a bit ridiculous.

One restriction being that you never come to NorCal?
