(05-18) 09:24 PDT SANTA CRUZ - Hundreds of large frozen cod spilled from a truck onto Highway 17 near Summit Road this morning, forcing authorities to close part of the road while they cleaned up the mess.
A load of the fish -- each up to 15 inches long -- tumbled from a commercial fish transport truck around 4 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fish filled at least one lane of Highway 17 north of Summit Road, the California Highway Patrol said.
"They were so large and there were so many that we had to call Caltrans to come and assist in the cleanup," said CHP Sgt. Steve Oreglia.
The fish were cleaned up about 90 minutes after the spill was reported.
Traffic is relatively slow at that hour, and "there were no accidents, no incidents" as a result of the fish spill, Oreglia said.
He said he didn't know if the driver -- who stopped and helped with the cleanup -- would be charged.
