Bay area traffic lane change car space
How much room do you consider "open" for you to lane change into?
This is the BAY AREA, during rush hour, in traffic, going 40 mph. Some old dude, old enough to still be an a$$hat not old enough to need his license taken away was in the next lane over and signalling to come into my lane. He was ahead of me. Since this was an acceleration area, I let the car directly in front of me accelerate more so that it opened up a gap of about a car + the buffer zone, about one traffic slot. This is during traffic so that's about a car length + a half car on each side; exactly what everyone else is current driving. The geezer feints and then slides into the slot.
I didn't think anything of it until the dude starts gesturing in his rear mirror like I wouldn't let him in. I'm like, WTF? I let you in! How much room do you need? But he's still jammering. I've been having crappy last few days and I don't need this so I give him the full finger and a frack you. I probably shouldn't have but oh well.
My impression is that 80% of the people consider the same slot size I gave, as evident of the spacing in the traffic. 10% use less; and 10%, like this dude assume more... usually from the old school.
So how much room do you guys give or consider "open"?

1.5 car lengths. I usually dont change my speed to let people with blinkers on merge in front of me. If they want in my lane they can A) speed up and go in front of me B) slow down and go behind me. I will purposely speed up to not let a SUV in front of me tho, they usually drive slower and block your view.

I normally let people in front of me because too many times when they get behind me they end up tailing me...and I HATE tailers. It makes me drive really slow on purpose, especially in slow traffic when you know that speeding up isn't going to make you get somewhere faster.

If im passing on the left i will leave 3 feet because they should GTF OVER if theyre not making progress (hence the fast lane), if im passing on the right i will leave at least 20 feet.
people flash their high beams at me when i get in front of them and they are going slow in the fast lane...i stick my hand out the window and tell them to GTFOVER (license plate idea up for grabs)
