you should throw in 10 more bucks and get the factory service manual cd off ebay. I have one for the bugeye models and its great

Easiest way to do it is partially pull the tranny away from the motor and send a gnome in. Have him chisel the old lining and replace with new. Viola! Gnomes - what can't they do?

 

what do I use for the new lining? Do I need to source it from Subaru? Can I use a liquid type gasket sealant?

 

If you read the Subaru service tech info you got, of course they're going to specify a Subaru lining...

 

Yeah, and I was joking about the gnome/chisel comment. I'm sure you knew that though.

 

I actually rented a gnome! Stuck at the front axels. Removed them from the hub assembly side but dunno what to do at the center diff. Supposedly some said there is a pin in the green section before the diff but I rotated more than 360 and don't see it on either the left or right side.

 

Yeah, should have left the axles in the hubs. There is a spring pin that holds the axles in on the tranny side. They push through to remove.
