Not an AWD scooby. You'll mess up the diffs and such. Flatbed it.

Per your owner's manual: 5MT cars can be towed with all 4 wheels on or off the ground. 4EAT cars must be towed with all 4 wheels off the ground. Neither can be towed on 2 wheels.

That is not entirely true. There are ways to do it with only two wheels on the ground.

But the best way would be on a flatbed… with me driving

Thats not entirely true. You dont have to put it on a flatbed, but you DO have to have all 4 wheels off the ground (with that rear wheel lift thingy that tows behind the car)

pull the rear drive line, not the whole thing just off of the rear diff and tie it up out of the way or sling it... where the rear wheels are on the ground and the front are in the air, but are able to turn freely, it looks funny going down the road, because the front wheels will spin while going down the road

the best way to do it is on a flat bed or to dolly it and keep all 4 wheels off the ground, pulling the drive line is good, but you have to put the driveline back... sling, good for short distances but possible damage to the front end unless you know what you are doing.

if you are paying to have it done... when you call it in, just tell them that it is an AWD car and the it MUST have a flatbed that way there are no problems. like I said it can be done with out a flatbed or with dollies but there should be no reason to.

oh BTW, I drive a tow truck

Question: Even with a flat bed tow, if the car is stuck in a ditch or a slope or any bad spot, before they are able to put it on the flatbed, they may still need to drag the car out with maybe just 2 wheels on the ground. Will that be enough to damage the differential already?

Holy crud. If you towed a WRX with the rear wheels on the ground the center diff would fry and probably catch fire.

BAD IDEA. Do not do this!

The reason the fronts would turn is that the center diff is heating the viscous fluid and locking. BAD BAD BAD.

Yeah, if it's getting pulled out of a ditch, odds are it won't be travelling far enough to do any damage, because odds are all 4 wheels will be on the ground, and it's just being dragged. If you need to be towed after you get out of the ditch, then it needs to be put up though.
