How to reduce scarring of skin?

If you read the thread where I took some sharp rocks to the face, you'll know that I had a really deep gash on my upper lip and it's healing really nicely (after 17 stitches) but it's going to leave a nasty scar (not all that crazy or anything, but enough to bug me). I just wanted to know if there's anything I can apply or do to reduce the scarring of the tissue?

I know staying out of the sun is key and a MAJOR factor in reducing scarring, but there's got to be something I can apply or buy for it. I've been taking vitamin E and using neosporin but other than that I'm just healing naturally.

(had the stitches in for 5 days before they were removed, and it took a little over an hour to remove them due to the complexity of the wound!!!)

I think Cocoa Butter might help for scarring, I mean women use it for stretch marks (which looks much like scarring)

arnica gel, cacao seed (if you can find it), cocoa butter, and maybe even some burts bees lip rescue. arnica gel helps with bruising and scarring and heals, but smells/tastes like butt.. the burts bees will help heal/repair your lip.
i work at whole foods so i get these questions all the time.

As someone with a lot of tattoos I am very familiar with avoiding scarring and can tell you that for non-tattoo related healing you should use one of the following: an aloe vera product that has no alcohol (such as Fruit of the Earth), a lotion that has a high concentration of vitamin E, a petrolatum-based healing ointment like Aquaphor, or just plain old fragrance free moisturizing lotion (like Curel). Your best bet is to go with a combination of the vitamin E enriched lotion and aloe vera. It's important to keep the affected area from getting too dry (apply lotion twice a day, morning and night), and keep it out of the sun, as that will cause it to heal a different color than the surrounding skin and make any scar you get much more noticeable.

Oh, and cocoa butter is very effective at helping to avoid stretch marks, but doesn't have any special properties that make it more effective for healing wounds.

Try using Mederma, its expensive but it should help reduce the appearance of scars

I remember one of my old bosses using something called "No Scar" or something like that. It was a spray

This may be it http://www.drugstore.com/products/pr...LAID=270424117

Don't just take vitamin E orally. Pierce the capsules and apply the contents directly to the wound.

Took 17 stitches diagonally across the shin bone thanks to slipping and hitting a jagged Feather River granite boulder. I used Vitamin E topically and it sure seemed to help. The scar is not noticeable unless I point it out to you.
