It really depends on your major and what you're studying. Also, where do you plan to work/live afterwards?
You can't have a car your first year in either schools, so that's out of the question.

As a PROUD UCD Alumni, I will argue with anyone about the quality of education received at UCD. It totally depends on your major and where you want to be. Davis has strong Biological Sciences (my major) and Engineering, a good law school and medical school.
I'm not sure what San Diego's strengths are in terms of academics. It would definitely be great to live close to the beach, but I really don't care for southern california peeps/lifestyle. I've heard San Diego is much different (better) than LA though. So figure out what school is more well-known for your major and balance that against the different locations.
As for those guys who bagged on Davis chics, take a look at my myspace pics and maybe you'll think twice next time before you bag on Davis chics. ;-)

It's hard to find an unbiased answer from people because very few of us will have gone to both schools to really make a good assessment. Why don't you visit both schools and go to the one you think would be a better fit for you? It's not really gonna matter which one has a better program in this subject or that if you don't apply yourself or enjoy being there in the first place.
When I was in high school, I was also accepted to UCSD and Davis. I was totally set on going to SD mainly because I liked the campus better and their bio program. Never really considered Davis because I knew I wouldn't be happy there. Ended up getting into Berkeley at the last minute so I decided to go there instead.
I'm in dental school now and have a few of classmates from both Davis and UCSD. I would say overall, my UCSD classmates were more prepared for our didactic classes than the ones from Davis, but it's a pretty small pool of people to base the entire academics of each respective college on. It could be that all the nerds at UCSD just came to my school.

Exactly! If you're really into learning and your major is difficult (like .... EE for example), you could be in heaven and you'll still be in hell.
Davis is closer to the Bay (obviously), which can go either way. IMO, it's far enough to feel independent, but close enough to go back home.
I believe UCSD is ranked higher than Davis according to US News mag. It might not mean anything when it comes to application of knowledge, but it can for looking good on paper. I have no clue which school is actually "tougher", but having a 3.0 at a good school vs a 2.0 at a better school... I'll take the 3.0 (just a made-up example)
