She is talking crazy talk. As long as your wrx has warmed up, there is no reason you can't rev the crap out of it. As many have mentioned, the WRX redlines at 7,000 rpm, while other cars may redline at a much lower rpm. Just tell her to stay out of your way when you see her on the road. :-)

The shift can depend on how you want to drive. For everyday driving, a little under 3k. For speed, 6k. Anything over 6k, is out of the power band. If you go over 6k, its just a waste because you're not making any power.

Shifting at 7 will enable you to be higher in the rev range in the next gear, which means you will be in the sweet spot for the shortest amount of time before shifting again, and then again. You shift at 7 to get the quickest acceration overall.

Glad to know we all shift at about the same rate. 3K-4K for normal driving, 4K-6K getting on to freeway, and redline for rice.

I agree....for everyday driving I shift bet. 4-4500
if "the man" is nearby....2-2500
for fun....5500-6250

much more than 6000 rpm's and the suby's powerband drops off pretty sharply (this is why you need a bigger turbo ).....so as Gagan said....by taking it higher you will be in a prime spot for the next gear.....but getting up to that higher rpm range before you shift, could cause you to lose the ra..........errrr.........spirited drive..... Besides if you practice your speed shifting, you wont have to worry about it, cuz your shift will only make you lose about 750rpms....which will drop you right back into your powerband for the next gear as well.

so IMO, if you take you R's up higher, but shift slowly...then yea, you will be setup for the next gear.......

OR

if you dont take the R's up quite as high, but make a much faster, more positive shift you will be in the same setup for the next gear as the previous situation. 50/50

you read it by looking at the gauge cluster and guessing.....

usually it begins with constant glances at the tach. Eventually you just do it by unconscious timing of how long you drive on the current gear.
