I am thinking about the train too, but I don't live close to any train stations and I know nothing about commuting by caltrains..... If I have to drive or take muni in order to take the train, I guess it's not worth the time?
I took the train for a while (before my daughter started school). There are more benefits than just time.

the train = less money on the commute, less wear and tear on the car, much less stress (all you do is sit on the train and read, people watch, sleep, etc).

Is the train pretty quick? Do you have to wait for a long time for one?

I would totally take the train if i can easliy get to the train station from my place

13-14 miles each way from San Leandro to Uptown Oakland. Sitting in traffic for 30 minutes for an otherwise 15-17 minute drive on a normal day with traffic flowing at normal speeds. So, what's better? 580 in the morning or 880 north in the morning between 8-8:30AM?
