Just wondering...

All you need is a NASA Competition license. The entry fee is $1000 for your first race and then $750 after that.

Brian,
I posted a simiar question on the NASA forum and Steve wrote me back as well. I actually wrote you an email before the SJGP asking you how you started and bunch of noob questions too.
Not that I would win, but is there a price (cash) for the winners?

I think you just go to http://www.nasaproracing.com/nasa_event/list_events and take the test. The question is... What do they check/look for during the test? What consider pass?

They ask you to drive in Group 4 comfortably at speed for your license test. The criteria are highlighted in the NASA HPDE book.

This may help figuring out what it really cost and what you can do and not suffer so much financially. Anyone can pay lic. and entry fees.

You can start with a cheaper to manage car and race on other class events (old school race ready cars used by someone who moved on/up are always worth bying for starter cars because everything is done already, just buy new sets of tires etc.) and then hone your skills and patience and then get into USTCC and it gives you more credits when you get future sponsors.

It looks better on the folder when you present the package to your future sponsors that you have been driving already and know what you are doing TEAM wise. Also, if you have survived now it just gets better with sponsors backing you.

Wrecking cars is the expensive part. You can be a good driver but accidents are always there and with a cheaper car it is more manageable.

Then sell that starter car and get into another class and get into more current vehicles of your choice. If you wreck in your rookie days, it hurts much more on a car you can barely afford to race in (it is so hard to get sponsors nowadays).

Sponsors favor experience drivers and tend to think twice on newbies. Unless you already have money to spend, then start where you want to be and youstill can get sponsors with a good package to present them.

Hope that helps you out.

Yes he is, he is also my criew chief.

The best way to get you license is to graduate up through the NASA HPDE program. Then when you get to group 4, you need to be able to drive at speed, passing and being passed, and if your instructor feels comfortable, you get your license.

Thanks again Brian. Yeah, I'll follow what you and Steve said, go through the HPDE program. Good thing is that all the events are on the weekend and they are pretty cheap. So how long did you stay in each of the class before you move up? How long did you participate in HPDE before you got your license? I think just a little before and during the preperation for the test would cost me the most due to all the requirements. But I think starting on the right track is already a big step for me.
