I just keep my rpms under 3k and by the time I get to the freeway my car is all warmed up.

LMAO ahaha.
on a serious note, with modern cars there's no need to wait too long before driving it. I just shift under 3k and let the clutch slip a bit more until everything is warm. I know that for diesel engines it is better to not let it sit.
The only problem is that when it's REALLY cold, like 0 or negative, sometimes I have to double clutch, but this probably doesn't happen to WRX/STI trannies.

hmm this is a good question.. normally my car just sits & idle & then once it's warmed up, i go. but what is the "correct" way of warming up your car? is it really what the op stated?
I idle the car until the temp needle moves, then I drive around below 4K rpms moderately going into boost. Depending on the weather I won't go WOT until I've been driving 7-15 min. My 2 cents.

well from what I've read, probably best bet is to let it warm up for a minute or so, then keep it under 3-4k rpms or out of boost until its at peak operating temp, until then no WOT
